These Police Officers Just Won Lip Sync Battle with Epic 'Uptown Funk' Video
In case you’re wondering who’s having the best performance week ever, it’s probably the Norfolk Police Department in Norfolk, Virginia.
The department has become an overnight sensation for their expertly choreographed, fun-loving rendition of “Uptown Funk,” the catchy tune rolling around in our heads since 2014.
The Norfolks were challenged to best the lip-syncing talents of the Corinth Police Department in Corinth, Texas.
The Corinth Police Department released their hit version of Miley Cyrus’ “Party in the U.S.A.,” earning bragging rights to the tune of over 7 million views.
Norfolk Cpl. William Pickering told The Virginian-Pilot he and his colleagues in the public information office accepted the task of selecting a song and choreographing the dance.
They recruited special ops division officer Christopher Taveras for the lead role of Bruno Mars.
People have told Taveras he resembles the Uptown Funk artist, and he agreed to take on the lead role.
Pickering wasn’t sure how many people would actually show up during their lunch break to film, but it turned out to be quite an enthusiastic cast of police officers and firefighters who sang and danced their way through police headquarters.
The cast made it through the entire segment in just one take, a feat they are pretty proud of. The video is on its way to 40 million views since its release on July 9.
“I’m just so glad people are enjoying it,” Pickering, told the Virginian-Pilot. “I’m at a loss for words.”
“We wanted to show the community our primary objective is to protect and serve the community, but we’re not robots,” Pickering said. “We share a lot of the same interests the community has.”
Keeping the fun alive, Norfolk challenged several other police departments across the U.S. to participate.
They tagged the Seattle, Virginia Beach and St. Louis Metropolitan Police Departments as well as the Norfolk Constabulary in a Twitter post to see if anyone would take the bait.
On July 11, the Seattle Police Department had two words for Norfolk: “It’s on.”
Seattle even dropped a hint about its song of choice, adding they needed some time to work out the details.
“We don’t want to make an unruly mess of this video, so we will take some time to put it together,” @SeattlePD wrote on Twitter.
