Renée Zellweger Stars as Judy Garland in New Biopic, Listen to Her Sing 'Over the Rainbow'

In anticipation of the new Judy Garland biopic starring Renée Zellweger, the first teaser trailer has been released, giving fans a chance to hear Zellweger sing Garland’s famous song, “Over the Rainbow.”

The minute-long trailer features scenes from the film, “Judy,” while Zellweger’s hauntingly beautiful interpretation of the song floats gently through the air.

Zellweger’s calm, melancholy voice is heard in stark contrast to flashback scenes of chaotic, star-studded, high-pressure events of Garland’s life.

Garland rose to fame in 1939 when she played Dorothy Gale in “The Wizard of Oz,” leaving a permanent mark on entertainment history.

She died of an accidental drug overdose at age 47 on June 22, 1969.

Zellweger thoroughly researched Garland in preparation for such an iconic role and said she developed a deeper understanding of the pressures the actress faced for decades.

Zellweger hopes that audiences will walk away with a better understanding, too.

“When there’s a better understanding of what it takes for a person to continue under certain circumstances there is a level of empathy and respect that you can’t help but feel,” Zellweger said in an interview with People.

“What she had to overcome in a time when women didn’t necessarily feel that they had power over their own lives in the way that we do today … that stayed with me and I hope folks will be moved by that as well.”

The film will also feature actor Finn Wittrock as Garland’s fifth husband Mickey Deans, Rufus Sewell as her third husband Sid Luft, and Michael Gambon as her manager Bernard Delfont.

“Judy” is directed by British stage director Rupert Goold and picks up the actress’ story about one year before her death, when she was performing a run of sold-out shows in London.

The biopic is set to premiere on September 27.
