Son Buys 88-Yr-Old Father New Bike, Reaction That Follows Is Like Kid on Christmas
It was only a couple years ago that Stuart ‘John’ Dunn cycled up France’s legendary Mont Ventoux. In 2011, he conquered Alpe d’Huez.
For decades, Dunn had been ready to get outdoors and cycle. He was an avid racer, medaling in a third-place finish in the 1954 British National Championships.
But now, at age 88, there was one thing he just wasn’t ready for. Dunn’s body couldn’t handle the rigorous climbs and speeds of his younger years.
Rather than give up cycling entirely, Dunn’s son offered an idea: his father should try riding an electric bicycle.
But Dunn shrugged off the idea of using an electric boost to power what his legs should be doing instead.
So, Dunn’s son gave his father a little nudge. The thoughtful son bought his father an electric bike and gave it to him as a surprise gift.
“I’m glad you like it, because it’s yours,” Dunn’s son said as he watched his father admire the bicycle. “I bought it for you.”
“You never!” Dunn exclaimed. Wide-eyed and grinning, Dunn saddled up for a ride, and he was instantly hooked.
Dunn gave the bicycle a gentle pedal for his maiden voyage.
To his delight, the electric bicycle proved to offer everything the cyclist needed — fun, speed, and a little help accelerating.
Zooming down the road, Dunn looked like he was in his 20s again. He was clearly enjoying himself, and his family looked on with delight.
Who knows whether or not Dunn ever would have tried an electric bicycle without his son’s prompting. But from the huge grin on everyone’s face, the e-bike was a smashing success.
