Cat Walks 12 Miles Home, But Family Wants Him Euthanized. Rescuers Step Up to Save Him

Share

When Toby the cat’s family decided to give him away, they gave him to family friends who lived 12 miles from their home.

Soon enough, Toby missed his old family, so one night he decided to escape. He walked the 12 miles back to his original owners’ home to see them.

But the cat was not met with accepting love of a family who missed him too. Instead, they immediately took Toby to a local animal shelter to be euthanized.

Workers at the shelter were heartbroken and knew they needed to do something to help the poor cat.

So they called the SPCA of Wake County, North Carolina, asking if they’d take Toby in. The SPCA immediately agreed.

“Of course we said yes!” they said in a Facebook post. Toby’s story quickly spread from there as they hoped to find him a forever home.

Toby suffers from Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, a disease which weakens his immune system and make him vulnerable to other infections.

But people were still very interested in him, and by Friday, April 13, Toby was adopted by a family who can show him what love truly means.

“He has new siblings, one feline, and two human, and a cat-savvy mom to show him what a loving family is really like,” the SPCA wrote.

“It’s funny,” SPCA communications manager Tara Lynn said. “He’s very sweet, but he didn’t get along with his roommate.

“We thought he’d need to be adopted out as the only cat in a home, but his new family has two other cats and he’s fine with them. He’s just been through a lot and wasn’t settled yet.”
