Couple with 13 Sons Welcomes Baby Number 14. Chances Were .02 Percent

Share

The Schwandt family from Kent County, Michigan, made national headlines back in 2015 after welcoming their 13th child into the family.

But it wasn’t the amount of children that put them into the spotlight. It was the fact that each one of the 13 children is a boy.

The boys range in age from 2 to 25 years old, but mom Kateri says that the amount of kids running around the house doesn’t faze her.

“If you have three, it’s the same as having 10 at this point, if you ask me,” she said. “It’s just more chaos, more noise. It’s nothing we’re not used to at this point.”

“There’s a lot of activity, a lot of commotion, a lot of chaos, but there’s also a lot of love,” she added.

So after announcing their 14th pregnancy in February of this year, it was only a matter of time before they were asked the obvious question: Would their 14th child finally be a girl?

“I would love to have a girl, but I just don’t think it’s in the cards. The last couple, numbers 12 and 13, we kinda held out a little hope,” Jay said after announcing their 14th pregnancy.

For each of their children, parents Jay and Kateri waited until the birth to find out their newest baby’s gender.

The couple added that they can’t imagine their home without a baby in it, but that this time, this baby will really be their last.

“It just feels like this is going to be it, and we’re going to enjoy every second of it,” Jay said.

The chances of the family having just 12 boys in a row was .02 percent, so even their 13th child defied the odds.

On Wednesday, April 18, the Shwandts and the world held their breath as the 14th baby entered the world — and it was another boy!

Although they didn’t have a girl, the family is grateful for a safe delivery for both mom and baby.

And at the very least, there will certainly be no shortage of hand-me-downs for the newest member of the family.
