Pilot Gives Flight Details Before Take-Off. Then Drops to 1 Knee in Front of Everyone
On Dec. 23, 2017, Airline pilot Jon Emerson, 24, was preparing passengers for their flight from Detroit to Oklahoma City.
Everything seemed normal as he went through the standard procedure discussing flight time, weather, and potential for turbulence during travel.
Then he began introducing passengers to the other crew members aboard the plane. When he got to the last flight attendant, his girlfriend Lauren Gibbs, he paused for a special announcement.
“This is a very special day for Lauren and me,” he said. “It’s our anniversary today and she’s one of our very best flight attendants.”
Passengers began to clap for the happy couple, wishing them a happy anniversary. But then Emerson did something unexpected.
“Now, she doesn’t know this yet, but it is going to be even more of a special day for her,” he continued in his announcement.
“And I want this day to be known for the rest of our lives. I want to spend the rest of my life with her, together.”
He called Gibbs up to the front of the plane as he pulled out a tiny tell-tale box from his pocket.
And before she knew it, he was down on one knee presenting her with a diamond ring beside the cockpit.
“Lauren, will you marry me?” Emerson said, smiling as Gibbs became clearly overwhelmed with emotion.
And before the words even came to her, Gibbs immediately bent down to kiss Emerson. “Yes!” she said as she pulled him up from the ground. “Yes!”
The pair hugged as the passengers of the plane applauded their engagement. Emerson then made sure to go back and announce to any passengers that missed it that his new fiancée said yes.
“I was caught so off guard,” Gibbs later said about the adorable proposal. “Jon is a really quiet guy, with a very shy personality, so for him to do it in front of passengers was so not like him, but for me it was perfect and so thoughtful.”
“We spend almost all of our time together on planes and working together so the timing and place was absolutely perfect,” she continued.
Emerson had been planning the proposal for their anniversary date for over three months, and it is clear that his planning paid off in a big way.
Both Gibbs and Emerson took to Facebook to share the news. “Last night, on a plane, in front of passengers, I got to say the easiest YES of my life to my best friend!” Gibbs wrote.
“It still feels like a dream and I cannot explain how blessed I am to spend forever with Jon,” She continued. “We are so thankful for our family and friends, and especially thankful for God leading (or flying) us to each other.”
“Couldn’t be a happier man!” Emerson echoed. “I’ve met the woman of my dreams and I’m lucky enough to spend the rest of my life with her!”
