Retired-Pastor-Turned-Walmart-Greeter Serenades Veterans Who Shop in Store
After only a month of working at the Chardon Walmart in Ohio, Freddy Davison is already a hit with every customer who walks through the door.
The retired pastor recently started his new job as a Walmart greeter, and his dedication to his work is quickly turning heads and capturing hearts everywhere.
In 1998, Davison was on his way to church when he got into a car accident that broke his back. Although he needs to use a wheelchair now, he’s chosen to see is an an advantage.
“I actually have found this to be an advantage not a disadvantage,” he said.
“When you’re sitting in a chair, it kind of disarms people in general and you know, with the kids you’re at eye level.”
While every customer that sets foot into the store receives a cheerful hello, it’s Davison’s greetings to veterans that are especially touching.
Each time he spots a veteran, Davison begins to sing the National Anthem. Many even join him, facing the American flag above the store entrance with their hands over their hearts.
While he can only stand for a short while, Davison chooses to stand up from his chair to honor veterans as he sings alongside them.
“Their service matters. Their life and sacrifice matters. And I want to make sure they know they are honored,” he explained.
“You can feel everything go from a busy store for just those two minutes, to complete stillness,” he added.
His incredible gesture coupled with his powerful singing voice has even brought customers to tears.
“I’ve seen customers tear up. It is awesome to see,” one shopper said.
“Oh! It is beautiful. I could hear him singing from all the way back in the store,” said Air Force veteran Dan Cicchella.
When asked why he chooses to greet customers the way he does, Davison said it didn’t take much thought.
“It’s simple. I try to treat people the way I want to be treated,” he said. “I know it sounds corny, but I believe in it. I live my life that way.”
