Tensions Rise as Royal Wedding Approaches: 'I Think She'll Bolt'

Share

The wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is just one month away. Royal fans everywhere are hanging onto every bit of information the couple is willing to share, including everything from the design of their invitations to which members of the public they’ve invited.

But as the happy occasion draws near, some are already predicting the marriage will fail before it even begins.

Feminist author Germaine Greer, 79, is among those expecting the worst possible outcome. Greer spoke with “60 Minutes” to explain what she believes will go wrong.

“She will see vistas of boredom that are unbelievable,” Greer said, predicting that Markle will quickly tire of the “monotony” of royal life.

Greer also cited Markle’s first marriage to Trevor Engelson as a reason the future royal is more likely to “bolt” soon after the wedding.

“I think she’ll bolt. She bolted before,” she said, referring to their 2013 divorce.

Do you think Meghan Markle is getting cold feet?

“It’s nearly always a question of a non-royal running for the hills just to get away from the whole thing.”

Greer also points to the wealth of the royal family as a sign that the marriage will quickly fizzle out, claiming that Markle seems to have given up parts of herself simply for status.

“Why would a girl born in poverty marry a man worth 53 million quid? I can’t think of single reason,” she said boldly.

Greer ended her interview wishing the couple a happy life together, and revealed her hope that if Markle does decide to leave royal life, Harry will go with her.

“I hope in a way that she’ll bolt but maybe she’ll take Harry with her,” she said, revealing her belief that the pressure of the “firm” (meaning the royal family) “is crushing.”

“But together, do you think, or should she give up on it already?” the interviewer asked her.

“No, no, stay with it for as long as it lasts,” Greer said. “Why not? But don’t stay for the bad bit. Be prepared to go when it gets bad. Just say ‘That’s it, gave it my best shot, I’m out of here.'”

“Let’s hope they’re in love. If they’re not it’s going to be totally unbearable.”

Although many like Greer have their doubts, dedicated royal fans are holding out hope for this royal fairy tale to work out in the end.
