Tiny Deformed Cat Is No Bigger Than Guinea Pig, Woman Knows It's Match Made in Heaven
When a tiny 3-pound dwarf munchkin cat named Giselle showed up at the Boston MSPCA shelter one day, volunteers knew she needed help. The cat’s fur was matted, she was incredibly scared, and she was totally blind.
The result of a genetic mutation, the small cat’s size proved to include quite a few big issues. Because her head was too big for her body, it was putting too much pressure on her spine and causing her pain. On top of that, all of her legs and other joints in her body had not developed properly, and her rib cage was too small for her lungs to fully expand.
Giselle’s overwhelming medical issues proved to be too much for her previous owners, so the MSPCA began working hard to find her a new home willing to take on such a big responsibility.
Shelter volunteer Alyssa quickly took Giselle under her wing as her foster mom. While they continued the search for her forever home, Alyssa began creating Instagram account for the cat.
It wasn’t long before the world took note of the precious cat in need of a family. Adoption applications from across the globe came flooding in, and soon, the adorable munchkin cat had a home.
At first, Giselle’s new mom Holly wasn’t sure if she was up to the challenge.
“I had said, ‘Yeah, but I don’t think I’m ready.’ And I knew better,” Holly said. “I didn’t sleep all night and I just thought about it and I was like, ‘You know what? I think I could help her.'”
Holly renamed her newest family member Potato, and when they first met, Holly was already asked to prove that she could handle the cat’s needs.
“The first time I walked into the room it was an emergency. It was kind of like ‘Oh my God, but okay, let’s go,'” she explained. “It was just that internal like, ‘I can help her.'”
Of course, Holly continues to be met with certain challenges when it comes to Potato. But after going through a difficult surgery to improve Potato’s life, things became easier, and soon, she began to warm up to her furry brothers and sisters.
“She’s kinda taken over. She’s kinda the small dog in the big dog yard and she loves it. She doesn’t care,” Holly said.
And finally, Potato started warming up to Holly.
“A year ago she hated being picked up but now she wants to have lap cuddles,” a post on Potato’s Instagram reads.
“She’s inspiring. I mean, it’s awesome to watch her. I’m very grateful that I get to spend time with her and be her advocate and care for her and everything. And I get to have couch cuddles with her.”
Thanks to Holly, Potato has finally found a loving home with a family — both furry and otherwise — to call her own.
