You've Been Throwing Away Avocado Pits for Years, But All This Time You Should've Been Eating Them

Share

Avocados are one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet.

Known for packing plenty of “good fat” within as well as an array of vitamins, minerals, and more, it’s no wonder this super food has become so popular.

But if you’ve been enjoying avocados and consistently throw away the pit, you are missing out on a world of possibilities.

One surprising way to use the pit of an avocado is to actually eat it!

While research is still being done to determine just how beneficial the pit is, studies have shown that it contains antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, and can help boost the immune system.

One of the most surprising benefits to eating the pit of an avocado is that it can help to fight cancer.

According to Juicing for Health, 70 percent of the antioxidants in the fruit are found in the seed. One of those antioxidants is flavonol, which helps reduce and prevent the growth of tumors.

In another study done by the peer-reviewed journal “Cancer Research,” researchers also discovered avocatin B in the extract of the seed, which was effective for killing acute myeloid leukemia cells.

Avocado pits also work wonders when it comes to protecting the immune system. The procyanidins and catechins within contain anti-inflamitory properties and plenty of fiber, and the flavonol also helps to defend the body against diseases, colds and the flu.

Eating the pit can also be beneficial for heart health. Amino acids and dietary fiber help to lower cholesterol and prevent strokes and heart attacks.

Dr. Tom Wu recommends eating the seed to heart disease patients. “This soluble fiber binds to the fat and excess cholesterol,” he explained. “Then we can lower cholesterol and improve heart function naturally.”

So just how do you prepare an avocado seed to be eaten? When you eat an avocado, save the pit and wash it off.

Then, pop it in a dehydrator or the oven at 250 degrees Fahrenheit and bake for two hours.

When the pit is ready, you’ll notice the outer shell has cracked. Remove it, and carefully cut into the now-soft pit with a large knife.

Once it’s been cut up, toss it into the blender under a powder forms. The powder can be used both in its moist form and dried out by roasting it.

Mix the powder into smoothies, teas, oatmeal, salads, and so much more. The possibilities are endless!
