Community Begs for Prayers After 10-Month-Old Baby Is Shot in the Head
A 10-month-old girl is in critical but stable condition and in desperate need of prayers after she was shot in the head while sitting in her mother’s arms.
According to the Fresno Police Department, on June 23, 18-year-old Deziree Menagh stopped by a birthday party in the early hours of the morning with her 10-month-old daughter, Fayth Percy.
While there, she ran into a man named Marcos Antonio Echartea, who police say she had met the week prior.
Echartea allegedly tried to grab Menagh’s hand and pull her onto his lap, but she pulled away.
“There was no relationship. It was very apparent that he wanted a relationship with her,” Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer said.
Menagh told others how Echartea was acting, and she eventually left the party with her daughter and a male friend, getting into a vehicle.
Echartea chased after the car, which had stopped down the block, and allegedly pulled out a handgun before firing three shots into the closed driver-side window.
One of the bullets struck the 10-month-old baby in the head as her mother held her, but miraculously, she did not die.
The driver immediately began driving to the hospital, before being met by police four blocks from the party. Officers began performing life-saving measures while waiting for paramedics to arrive on the scene.
At the hospital, doctors removed bullet fragments from Fayth’s head. She is now in critical but stable condition.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Echartea is facing felony charges including attempted murder and will appear in court this week.
Doctors credit at least part of tiny Fayth’s survival to the fact that the car window was closed.
However, she has a long road to recovery ahead of her, and her survival is still in question.
Dyer is calling for the greater community to send up prayers on behalf of the tiny girl. “I know the parents are broken,” he said.
“They are hurting. We held hands at the hospital and prayed for the baby, and we’re asking that everyone in this community come together and pray for baby Fayth for a complete recovery.”
Chief Dyer added that Menagh and Fayth’s dad Bennie Percy have remained by her side as they pray for their young daughter’s life.
The police briefing posted to Facebook has been flooded with prayers for the young girl’s speedy and full recovery.
