Famous Celeb Sandra Bullock Donates $100,000 for Animals Suffering in California Wildfire
The ancient Romans liked to opine that “homo homini lupus,” which means “man is a wolf to man.” Given the various horrors that have occurred in both the ancient and modern world, you can’t say that they’re wrong.
But that’s not the full story either. For every Dachau concentration camp and Wounded Knee massacre, we can find countless examples of human kindness. Though people aren’t angels, they aren’t entirely devils either.
We’re seeing that truth play out in the wake of the recent California wildfires, which have proven both incredibly destructive and fatal. Famous celebrities, though, are doing their part to alleviate the suffering of others.
According to USA Today, numerous big names have begun chipping in to aid those impacted by the devastation. For instance, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have donated $500,000 to the Malibu Foundation, a nonprofit that provides emergency relief assistance.
That’s a big chunk of change in and of itself. But Cyrus and Hemsworth gave it despite losing their own home to the blaze, saying they “want to give back to the place that has created so many beautiful memories for themselves and others.”
Famed chef Guy Fieri whipped up a feast for first responders from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office using his culinary craft. “Thank you so much Guy for filling our bellies and lifting our spirits,” the Sheriff’s Office tweeted.
And even though Lada Gaga had to abandon her property in Malibu, she decided to spread a little cheer amongst the other evacuees. She turned up at a Red Cross shelter and began handing out gift cards.
“I know we do not know each other, but I love you,” she said. “This is an emergency, but you are not alone.”
But actress Sandra Bullock has addressed a need that many have overlooked: displaced animals. CNN reported that Bullock has given $100,000 to the Humane Society of Ventura County.
“Our efforts for rescuing and caring for evacuated animals from the Hill and Woolsey fires had caught her attention and her team reached out to the shelter to show their support,” the Humane Society of Ventura County wrote on Facebook. “Sandra Bullock and her family have reached out to other nonprofit organizations both during this incident and in the past.
“However, this time she wanted to contribute to those on the frontline rescuing animals in peril and hope others will choose to do the same. The HSVC pledges to care for these animals for as long as is needed or until their owners feel comfortable in safely reuniting their families.”
This is far from the first time that Bullock has given to others. She has a long history of charitable endeavors.
According to Glamour, she has supported a wide variety of nonprofits. After the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, she gave $1 million to the American Red Cross.
She did so again when tsunamis crashed into Asia in 2004. And she helped fund a school for young women in Texas.
Yet despite her generosity, Bullock seems to not desire the publicity associated with it. When asked why she rarely talks about it, she gave a pithy reply.
“It’s none of (the media’s) business,” she said. “I don’t want to be seen as the kind of person who does things and then expects publicity in return.”
