Hero Postal Carrier Stops Creep from Allegedly Trying To Rape 90-Year-Old Woman

When we encounter trouble, we like to think that the police will soon arrive to help us. Now make no mistake, the men and women who wear the blue perform tremendous acts of heroism each and every day.

But it can take time for the police to arrive after something awful occurs. And sometimes when they arrive on the scene, the worst may have already happened.

That’s why people need to take steps to protect themselves — and why we ought to step up for our friends and neighbors. One Chino, California, letter carrier went a step further, though.

On a day in Sept. 2017, United States Postal Service employee Antonio Colon was doing what he did every day: delivering mail. But this time, something entirely out of the ordinary occurred.

According to Champion Newspapers, he heard a woman calling for help in both English and Spanish. “I was close by, so I rushed over,” he said.

“The screen door of the apartment was closed, but the door was open. I saw the back of a man kneeling on the ground. When I asked what was going on, he got up quickly and started to button up his shorts.”

The man quickly said he was trying to help the woman up and he’d just head on out now. It tuned out that she was 90 years old, and she continued crying out, asking Colon to come to her aid.

“No, mi hijo, he’s trying to rape me, call the police,” the woman cried. And that was exactly what Colon started to do.

It was also the last thing the assailant wanted to have happen. He started trying to leave the apartment a second time.

“I said that was fine, but he had to wait for the police to tell them,” Colon stated. When the man asked if the letter carrier wanted to “get involved,” Colon shot back, “I’m already involved.”

Undeterred, the assailant attempted to leave once more. That was when Colon got serious.

He whipped out the pepper spray he kept on his person for self defense. This time, the man sat down and stayed down.

The police arrived, and the assailant calmly went with them. That wasn’t the end of Colon’s involvement, though.

A middle-aged man called the post office later on in the day. He was the woman’s son, and he wanted to thank Colon for helping her.

“[Colon’s] call to act was awesome,” National Letter Carriers Association spokesman Philip Dine stated. “It was incredible for him to intercede.

“What a stand-up action. He was trying to keep [the assailant] from doing this to someone else.”

Government Executive reported that Colon was honored in Washington, D.C., for his actions. “I don’t think I deserve this, but thank you anyway,” he said when receiving his award.
