HGTV 'Good Bones' Star Gives Birth, Shares Sweet Photos with Fans of Newborn
Babies change everything. No matter how many books you read, how much counsel you seek, how many parenting aids you purchase, that little life arrives like a sledgehammer smashing through drywall.
How could it be any other way? As adorable as they are, infants are utterly helpless, totally unable to care for themselves.
So they enter into our lives, demolishing whatever established routines stand in their way and renovating our day-to-day existence into a new normal. That’s a truth that I’m sure Mina Starsiak of HGTV’s “Good Bones” is starting to understand.
Starsiak knows what it’s like to deal with ordered chaos. According to the Indianapolis Business Journal, she and her mother, Karen Laine, founded the real-estate rehab company Two Chicks and a Hammer in 2007.
The mother-daughter duo had a simple plan: Buy busted-up houses, get to swinging, make them into something beautiful, and then sell them.
They made money, and that led to an entirely unexpected development. A talent scout approached them in 2013, and they ended up sharing their business with the world on “Good Bones.”
Three seasons have passed, and Starsiak revealed the big news to her mother this season. She surprised Laine by telling her she was pregnant as the cameras rolled.
“I’m a control freak and I’m a huge planner, and mom’s advice is good luck with that,” Starsiak told Fox News. “When the kid comes out, it’s their world and you just live in it.
“We’ll make it work for the business and for me and the baby, but it may not be like a conventional or approved method of child rearing … I love working, and luckily we have flexible enough work.”
Starsiak also said that Laine had let her find her own way as a kid, enforcing boundaries while not hovering. “No children died on my watch!” Laine quipped.
Well, the wait has officially ended. Pop Culture reported that Starsiak and her husband Steve welcomed little Jack Richard at 4:15 a.m. on August 9.
The little bundle weighed 6 pounds, 1 ounce and was a lengthy 19 inches. Though the 33-year-old star admitted she took her time in starting a family, she said she wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I’m not the girl that grew up talking about her wedding and babies since she was a little girl,” she stated. “I definitely took my time, and I’m just so excited that that road has put me where I am: loving my career, having a smokin’ hot husband, who is just the greatest, and choosing to start our family at a time where Steve and I can really be our best and do our best for the first of hopefully a couple little ones.”
The couple already has some parenting experience. For one thing, they’ve cared for a posse of pooches ever since they tied the knot.
Also, they cared for Steve’s sister’s child, two-year-old Julie, for roughly a year. That experience convinced Starsiak that they were ready.
“Having another human depend on you really changes you in a way you can’t really put into words,” she said in a statement. “Seeing the amount of love Steve developed for Bean in such a short amount of time, someone who was previously a stranger to him, solidifies how awesome of a dad he’ll be.”
