Joanna Gaines Returns to HGTV in New Spinoff, but Without Chip by Her Side
When “Fixer Upper” announced it was ending after its fifth season, fans of HGTV’s smash hit remodeling show were shocked. Had the brainchild of Chip and Joanna Gaines wrapped up because of a conflict between its stars or perhaps bad blood with television execs?
The cheery couple soon revealed that neither was the case. Rather, Joanna was pregnant and the non-stop stress of crafting a hit show was beginning to wear on them.
“We would be foolish to think we can go and go and fire on all cylinders and never stop to pause,” they said. “Our family is healthy and our marriage has honestly never been stronger.”
“This is just us recognizing that we need to catch our breath for a moment. … Who knows what the future holds, but we’re excited for whatever is around the bend and in the meantime, we will definitely be staying in touch.”
Well, the Gaineses are already back only two weeks after the final “Fixer Upper” episode aired — or at least one half of them. On April 10, Joanna returned to HGTV with a new show named “Fixer Upper: Behind the Design.”
The show aims to grant viewers a behind-the-scenes peek into the “Fixer Upper” world. It uses past episodes of the hit as its foundation and expands from there.
“Behind the Design” will stick closely to Joanna’s point of view from the earliest moments of each past show. Following her as she meets with homeowners and showing how she works her style process, it provides a rare glimpse into the method behind the Gaines magic.
“I can’t wait to show our fans how every piece of the design comes together before the final reveal,” Joanna said in a statement. “I want to nail every detail so that, when we walk away, Chip and I know we’ve given a family the one-of-a-kind home of their dreams.”
The show, which has a planned run of 15 episodes, will also show what happens in all those other rooms that don’t appear on the screen. (Here’s a hint: They get remade while simultaneously serving as storage rooms for the show’s props.)
