Puppy Miraculously Survives After Being Shot in the Head Multiple Times
We all know how terribly people can treat one another. Whether out of misplaced ambition, group identity, ideological commitment, or (as my father would’ve put it) plain old cussedness, men and women can commit horrible crimes against one another.
When it comes to animals, though, some humans start looking even worse. And that’s particularly true in the case of a cattle dog puppy from Bakersfield, California.
The Facebook page for Pet Matchmaker Rescue CA described the situation that occurred on May 16, stating, “A Good Samaritan heard gunshots outside her house. She ran outside to see several teenagers running down the street.
“She then saw this sweet baby crying in pain under her car.” But that description hardly does the situation justice.
The bystander was Alejandra Guardado, and once the flat, cracking sound of the shots had faded, she discovered the little dog — which had been shot multiple times.
“There was a lot of blood,” she told The Bakersfield Californian.
“I was freaked out and didn’t know what to do at first. I was in shock about the whole thing.”
Fortunately, Guardado thought quickly and reached out to a friend who volunteered with Pet Matchmaker Rescue, a local nonprofit. At 11 p.m., the friend got the little puppy, who would come to be known as Oakley, to Bakersfield Veterinary Hospital.
The wounds the teenagers had inflicted on Oakley were devastating. She’d been shot in the face, and the buckshot had nearly penetrated her brain.
According to KERO-TV, those little lead pellets had blasted through the puppy’s eye, rendering her blind and requiring future surgery to remove the eye.
Morgan Sokolow Gall, the Pet Matchmaker Rescue director, was shocked — as were many — by what had happened to Oakley.
“The fact that any teenager could do this to a puppy astounds me,” she said. “This wasn’t self-defense. It was purely evil.
“It was a malicious act that these teenagers were doing.”
Something else shocked Gall, too — but in a good way.
Not only did the puppy miraculously survive the attack, she remains outgoing and interested in people.
“It’s just mind-boggling that this dog is in the condition she is in today,” Gall said.
“I’ve been doing rescues for 13 years, and I’ve never seen a dog come back from such a horrible situation and be this normal. She’s not traumatized from it.”
Pet Matchmaker Rescue has begun soliciting donations for Oakley’s treatment, raising more than $4,000. She is currently with a foster family while she awaits surgery — and hopefully a forever home.
