12-Year-Old Boy Smashes Car's Windshield To Save Toddler Trapped Inside
A young boy from Tulsa, Oklahoma, acted heroically this week when he broke through a car’s windshield and saved a toddler’s life.
Temperatures rose and the heat index was up to 116 degrees in Tulsa on Wednesday, with KOKI-TV calling it the hottest day of the summer thus far.
And it was during this heatwave that 12-year-old Ben, along with his mother Nikki Fields, arrived at a local shopping center to run some errands, inadvertently stumbling on a potentially life-threatening situation.
Out in the parking lot, a toddler had been left locked alone in his mother’s car. As temperatures continued to rise, the child became agitated. Fields and Ben saw the 2-year-old crying in the heat, with no way of getting fresh air.
All the car’s windows were rolled up, according to Fields’ Facebook post, and the doors were locked.
With no sign of the child’s parents anywhere, the 12-year-old decided to act.
While his mom called 911, Ben took a ratchet strap from her car and began swinging the metal end against the car’s side windows. After several unsuccessful attempts, he moved to the windshield.
“I thought it would be a lot easier because it’s bigger,” he told KOKI-TV. Using the strap, Ben managed to crack the window. Still, the glass wouldn’t give way.
Ben then climbed atop the vehicle, stomping on the glass with his feet. At last, the glass shattered enough to hook it with the ratchet strap.
He then got ahold of part of a metal clothing rack that he used to pry aside extra broken glass, pulling a section of the windshield out completely so he could crawl inside.
“I put the hook into the windshield, and then pulled it out, and then I unlocked it,” he said.
Climbing through the open space, the boy was able to reach the toddler and carry him to safety.
Around this time, police and paramedics arrived at the scene. They managed to locate the child’s mother, who claimed that when she left the vehicle, another adult had been with the little boy in the car.
Police have since decided to fine her and launch an investigation through the Department of Human Services.
However, the toddler was determined to be unharmed by paramedics — hot and upset, but alive and well. Thanks to Ben’s heroic actions, the little boy escaped any serious injury.
“I’m so proud of him,” the boy’s mother told The Western Journal.
Overall, everyone involved was thankful and relieved that a good neighbor had been paying attention and was there to save the day.
