Stray Dogs Save Life of Newborn Girl Wrapped in Plastic and Dumped in Sewage Drain
Not long after her birth — mere hours in fact, according to doctors — a baby girl was abandoned in the worst imaginable place: a sewer drain.
The unidentified child, whose parents are unknown, was hospitalized this week after an incredible rescue led to her survival.
Footage from a surveillance camera pointed at the street on July 18 showed the moment the little girl’s cries attracted the curiosity of several unlikely heroes.
In the surveillance footage captured in Haryana, India, three stray dogs approached the drain, sniffing and exploring to see if they can locate the source of the noise. One gradually wanders off, but the other two stop to investigate.
Venturing inside the mouth of the drain, the heroic dogs managed to grab hold of the infant and drag her out into the open.
At that point, a passing motorist rode by on a bike, and one of the dogs dragged the baby to the side of the street and out of danger.
According to The Times of India, once the dogs had pulled the baby from the sewer, they started to bark, attracting the attention of people nearby.
Upon finding the two strays with a barely-alive newborn, the good Samaritans raced the little girl to the hospital. The tiny baby’s body was reportedly wrapped in plastic.
Doctors diagnosed her with several head injuries. But, incredibly, the child was alive.
“She is likely a premature baby born after seven months of pregnancy,” principal medical officer Dinesh Kansal said.
“We decided to keep her under observation as transit could be life-threatening for her.”
The same camera that captured the child’s miraculous rescue also recorded the moment she was abandoned. Police viewed footage of an unidentified woman tossing the infant into the sewer before hurrying from the scene.
Authorities are investigating, hoping to identify the woman in question in order to pursue a case against her.
Police say the little girl remains hospitalized and continues to fight for her life at a civil hospital in Haryana, according to News 18.
But thanks to her heroic rescuers, both human and otherwise, the baby has a second chance to live and grow despite the cruelty she suffered during her first few hours.
