Pup Freed from Heavy Chains Gets First Taste of Freedom and It Is Beautiful

According to the non-profit Mosby Foundation, only one in 10 canines actually finds a permanent, loving home for life. It’s a sobering statistic, but this organization is well-acquainted with the issue — its volunteers care exclusively for injured, neglected, and abused dogs in need.

Other organizations have answered this pressing call as well. Virginia-based Dogs Deserve Better, for example, dedicates itself to freeing chained or penned pups.

Clearly, there seems to be a tragically necessary niche for these dedicated groups. ASPCA statistics suggest that annually, roughly 1.5 million shelter pets are euthanized because they simply couldn’t find a caring human “pack” to call their own.

That’s why Dogs Deserve Better dedicates itself to finding loving new families for each of its deserving canines.

This 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization was founded in 2002, and places particular emphasis on pets who have been deprived of consistent human companionship.

Misty was one of these forsaken pups. This sweet soul’s entire existence was confined to being harshly chained in somebody’s backyard.

But rescuers from Dogs Deserve Better managed to liberate Misty from this unforgiving life. They transported her from South Carolina to their specialized rehabilitation facility in Smithfield, Virginia.

There, Misty’s outlook was touchingly transformed. And this beautiful metamorphosis started taking place the moment she arrived.

Team members at Dogs Deserve Better explain that once incoming or anxious dogs become sufficiently familiar with their new surroundings, they’re allowed to go on their very first “Freedom Run.” There are no chains, constraints, or leashes of any kind — only open skies, intriguing new scents, and a fenced-but-spacious lawn area.

Dogs Deserve Better posted snapshots of Misty’s first run on its Facebook page.  And let’s just say a picture is worth a thousand words.

For Misty and many of the other lucky pups at Dogs Deserve Better, the future is looking brighter every day. It’s a great reminder that if you’re searching for a new family canine, a rescued pet can make an especially loyal companion for life.

Speaking of renewed lives, here’s an interesting fact that might make you smile as well. The space that Dogs Deserve Better currently occupies was once the home of Bad Newz Kennels — the dog fighting compound owned by Michael Vick.

The new name is exceptionally fitting, thanks to the ongoing labor of love this sanctuary now represents. It’s called the Good Newz Rehabilitation Center.
