Watch: Dog Can't Stop Crying When He Realizes Soldier Dad Is Hiding Behind Blanket

Share

If you’re a huge animal lover, maybe you’ve heard about the latest challenge taking social media by storm: the “What the fluff?” challenge.

It’s pretty easy to jump on the bandwagon yourself. All you need is a big blanket, along with your favorite kitty or canine.

Basically, the challenge involves an old-school sleight-of-hand trick. There’s no actual magic involved — but try telling that to your furry friend.

A beloved pet owner stands in an open doorway, then “hides” behind the raised blanket before abruptly letting it drop. Pet owners everywhere are posting some hilarious animal reactions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

But occasionally, those reactions can literally bring tears to your eyes. One recent video illustrates this point with particular poignancy. It’s been shared by Viral Hog and others.

The brief video involves a soldier returning to his trusty golden retriever, following an extended military deployment.

According to Business Insider, the United States currently has active duty troops stationed in roughly 150 countries worldwide. That means an awful lot of folks can relate to this dog’s heart-melting reaction.

In many “what the fluff” videos, pet participants merely look confused or even stunned when their human friend temporarily “disappears.” A couple cats have lost interest entirely, and strolled right out of the room.

Have you tried the 'What the fluff?' challenge?

But there’s a reason canines are known as man’s best friend. And there’s a reason this soldier’s video reunion has been viewed all over the globe.

The 45-second scene shows the man’s trusty pup sitting patiently in front of a raised blanket. “Who’s that…?” teases a woman’s voice, prompting the dog to glance around inquisitively.

Then the blanket drops dramatically, revealing the soldier standing in the doorway. And the pooch instantly loses it.

The excited hound hurries toward his beloved and long-departed companion. Immediately, this grateful golden retriever begins continuously crying in a way that sounds uncannily like an actual human child.

The dog’s tail is wagging so frantically that it actually spins him around on the slippery tile. The soldier kneels down, and eagerly welcomes his best pal right back into his arms.

To date, this short but touching video has been shared, liked, and loved thousands of times across social media. It tugs at the heartstrings because it illuminates a powerful truth.

Our loyal canines exist, quite literally, to adore their very favorite humans. It’s a tender bond that’s been revered and written about for centuries.

In fact, American poet Douglas Malloch may have summed it up best in rhyming verse. “Thorns may hurt you, men desert you, sunlight turn to fog,” Malloch wrote, “but you are never friendless, ever, if you have a dog.”
