Legendary cinematic songs like “Do-Re-Mi” inform us that there are only eight tiny notes in a scale. Music aficionados know that technically, there are actually 12 notes in the classic chromatic scale — but still, that’s not so many.
In fact, that number is almost nonexistent compared to how many animal subspecies the world contains. Some scientific estimates maintain that there are roughly 6.5 million recognized groups on land alone.
If you break down a random category like dairy cows, you can appreciate the astonishing variety. You’ve got Holsteins, Jerseys, Brown Swiss, Ayrshire cattle — even a hardy Bavarian breed with the fun-to-pronounce moniker Murnau-Werdenfel.
That’s why it’s so interesting to witness what happens when that humble handful of melodic notes enters the equation. Popular publications like “Modern Farmer,” for example, praise music as an inexpensive way to help maximize cow comfort.
There are probably a lot of research-based reasons why this seems to be the case. But a recent, popular video on social media simplifies everything down to a laughing little girl, and her miniature accordion.
The short snippet itself is just over a minute long. It shows a wee lass in a white sundress, sitting by a gate in a peaceful meadow.
She begins to play a simple folk tune on a small instrument called a concertina. Eagle-eyed viewers can discern the tiniest hint of movement — just a mild stirring way off in the distance, out among the trees.
Patiently, the girl continues her serenade. The camera shifts its focus toward the field, and now that subtle activity is much more pronounced — a rapturous rush of black, white, and brown.
It’s cows of all shapes and sizes, hurrying forth to savor those sweetly uncomplicated strains.
The little girl turns toward the lens, and giggles gleefully.
“It’s like a stampede,” chuckles a nearby male voice, probably the gentleman filming.
“Play it again for them,” he prompts; and so she does.
The cows crowd even closer to hear, and the little girl laughs even more. Meanwhile, the rest of us marvel at this calmly comfortingly scene — and the pure, unassuming power of music to bring all kinds of creatures together.
