Man Throws Birthday Party for Pothole After Waiting Months for Road Repair

Share

Everyone deserves a birthday celebration — you, your cat, dog or even that pesky pothole in the street. At the very least, a birthday party is a fantastic excuse to enjoy some cake.

One Kansas City, Missouri, man has earned viral fame for starting this birthday tradition for a 3-month-old pothole on his street.

After multiple calls to report the dangerous pothole that had yet to be filled, Frank Sereno thought it was time to get creative.

“I’m going to have a celebration for Pothole,” Sereno told KCTV. “I got some cake, lit a candle and had a little birthday party for Pothole. He seemed thrilled with the idea.”

Fitting for July, the cake was decorated in red, white and blue. A candle in the shape of the number three perched on top. He snapped a photo of the celebration to post on Facebook.

“I didn’t sing to him,” Sereno said. “It was too hot out.”

Sereno’s neighbors were amused with his bold message to the city. Many people noted that the pothole has posed a danger to the surrounding community for months.

“I’m extremely excited to see it filled,” Taylor Kruh, Sereno’s neighbor, said. “It’s been a fight.”

Sereno believes that something had to be done to convince the city to act.

“The asphalt is completely degraded,” Sereno said. “It’s just a symptom of our deteriorating road conditions.”

Maggie Green, a spokesperson for the city’s public works, assured everyone that the pothole hadn’t been forgotten.

“Our crews are out on all the districts working through the 311 backlog,” Green said. “There’s a lot of potholes still on the list we’re working through.”

However, a few days after Sereno’s party went viral, the pothole was fixed. Sereno decided that another celebration was in order to commemorate the momentous event.

“Pothole has been repaired!” Sereno’s Facebook post reads. “To celebrate, my fellow Waldo neighbors are warmly invited to the Waldo Pothole ‘Graduation’ Ceremony on July fifth, two thousand nineteen, at five o’clock in the afternoon at the corner of 83rd and Cherry Street, Kansas City, Missouri, 64131.”

Sereno also noted that “cake and light refreshments will be served.”

Liftable, a section of The Western Journal, has reached out to Frank Sereno for comment but has not yet received a response. We will update this article if and when we do.
