Woman Survives Being Rolled Over by Tractor Because of 7-Year-Old Boy's Heroic Actions

For first-grader Waylon Boyd, Monday morning marked just another average day at Gaston Elementary in Gaston, Oregon. When he and his classmates were called to an assembly, he had no idea his entire school was about to know his name.

The 7-year-old was surprised when the Gaston Fire District announced that they were visiting his school to recognize him for his heroic actions.

“We’d like to recognize Waylon Boyd,” Randy Hoodenpyl, an EMT with the Gaston Fire District, said to the gathering.

A beaming Boyd was invited to the front of the room to receive gifts and recognition from his community and peers.

Among the presents were a first aid kit, a backpack and a shirt reading “Next Generation Firefighter” — a fitting title for the boy who saved his neighbor’s life.

“Last Saturday, May 4, we ran on a pretty serious emergency call,” Hoodenpyl explained to the crowd.

According to the call, a tractor had rolled over a woman and she was in desperate need of medical attention. The Gaston Fire District was able to promptly respond to the accident thanks to Boyd, who had taken immediate action when he noticed what was happening.

Boyd was the only one who noticed his neighbor in trouble. The 7-year-old wasted no time alerting the woman’s husband and his own parents, who were then able to place the emergency call.

When asked how he knew to notify the woman’s husband, Boyd simply told KGW8 that “he was in her family.”

Boyd seemed happy with his title of “hero,” smiling at the crowd gathered for the assembly.

Boyd’s family is proud that he was able to help save his neighbor, who is now healing from the accident.

“I’m really proud. We’re both really proud. He did really, really good,” said Waylon’s mother, Samantha Boyd. “I think it’s something you as a parent want to see happen.”

“Way to go, Waylon Boyd! We are so proud of your leadership!” the Gaston School District posted on Facebook.

Although you might not immediately picture a 7-year-old when you hear the word “hero,” Boyd has proven that heroes can come in all shapes, sizes and ages!
