Days After Pittsburgh Massacre, City of Jerusalem Lights Up Wall with Message for Victims

Share

The mass shooting that took place at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Congregation on Oct. 27 is being called “the most deadly antisemitic attack in American history,” according to The Anti-Defamation League.

A total of 11 people lost their lives that day. The morning was one intended for prayer and worship. Instead, an unspeakable act took place — and act that leaves us asking, “Why?”

Like #VegasStrong represented support for survivors just over a year prior, social media posts are popping up with the hashtag #PittsburghStrong as people show support for the families and citizens of this great city.

KDKA CBS 2 Pittsburgh reported that SWAT teams and officers from the Pittsburgh Police Department ran toward the danger in hopes to stop the shooter and save lives.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have rallied to host a blood drive and collect donations for the victims’ families, AJC reports.

But the love and support hasn’t stopped at this city’s borders. Americans, and even Jerusalem, have stood with Pittsburgh against this vicious hate crime.

A beautiful tribute shone on Jerusalem’s Old City walls on the evening of Oct. 28. An image of the flags of Israel and America flags were placed side by side.

The projection read, “We are with you Pittsburgh!” Jerusalem’s government officials and residents have sent their deepest condolences to the families of the victims.

The Jerusalem Post also reported that candlelit vigils were held at Jerusalem’s Zion Square on the very same evening.

“Whenever there’s a terrorist attack in Israel, we meet in Zion Square,” Dina Winer, a member of The Meeting Place Dialogue Group, shared with The Jerusalem Post.

Winer went on to explain her deep sadness that this attack happened in America, a place where she grew up and didn’t believe to be a place where these types of attacks occurred.

Sadly, attacks like the Pittsburgh shooting seem to be happening more often in many states across our nation. While it is heartbreaking, it is also comforting to know we stand united in these times.

Thank you, Jerusalem. Your support for this congregation thousands of miles away touches our hearts in a way words cannot express.
