Kind Woman Teaches 'Clueless' Mom How To Style Her Adopted Daughter's Hair

Share

A pair of moms who may seem different on first glance are actually finding out they have a lot in common because they took time to reach out and look beyond the surface.

Stephanie Hollifield is half the brain behind Momstrosity, a combination blog, podcast and channel that seeks to inspire and encourage parents.

While Hollifield tends to offer advice to her followers, she decided to step out of her comfort zone to ask for advice from some friends on Facebook.

Her adopted daughter, Haley, is black. Hollifield found herself frustrated with the little girl’s hair and how she couldn’t seem to keep it from drying out.

“Dear Black Friends of Social Media,” she wrote on Facebook in November 2018. “This clueless white momma is humbly coming to you to ask your help with Haley’s hair.”

Hollifield goes on to explain her predicament, pleading with others with experience and know-how for advice that might let her in on that extra something she’s been missing.

“The response was astounding,” she says on her blog. “Within an hour, I had gotten dozens of comments and handfuls of personal messages. Helpful, encouraging, useful advice. I immediately felt supported by my community.”

Are you ever afraid to reach out to others because of cultural barriers?

One woman named Monica Hunter even offered to go to Hollifield’s house and show her how to fix Haley’s hair in a protective style that would keep it from drying out.

“She gave us her time, advice, headbands, combs and hair product,” Hollifield wrote in a separate Facebook post. “She asked for nothing in return… I felt supported by my new friend.”

Their story has since gone viral. Hunter’s kindness has been praised across social media and Hollifield explained how this astounded her as being “newsworthy.”

“In our country, where everything seems so divisive,” she writes, “this quiet act of kindness spoke loudly to people from all walks of life.”

The reason this story became such a big deal is that many time people from different walks or cultures are afraid to reach out to one another.

While this story began as a bad hair day (or days), it has ended up becoming so much more. “We have so much to offer each other,” Hollifield explains.

“There is so much more that we have in common than the things that divide us.” Thank you, Hollifield. Your story is a beautiful reminder and encouragement.

May we never be too afraid to reach out to others, no matter the barriers or gaps we see. Who knows? We might end up making a new friend in the process.
