Little Boy Uses Life Savings To Buy Gas Station Attendant a Bike To Get to Work With
As January is the month in which we observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day, what could be more fitting than a story which encompasses this great man’s values and legacy?
It was MLK Jr. who said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?'” It’s a simple question to ask, but it is perhaps one we don’t ask often enough.
Well, one young man from South Africa decided to ask himself this very thing. And it ended up being everything for the person who needed it most.
Mandy Moo Fish shared a story on Facebook that will warm your heart. A story that serves as a reminder that the little things make all the difference.
Fish’s son Vaughn was ill one day when he and his mother pulled up to a Caltex gas station in Gillitts. It was there the boy found a new friend in the attendant who worked there.
“Within moments the attendant had him laughing and smiling,” Fish wrote, recalling how the attendant, Tony, made her son’s day despite his being under the weather.
“Since then we regularly visit the station and Vaughn eagerly looks out for his new friend,” Fish went on. “Tony always takes the time to talk to Vaughn…”
This is customer service at its finest, certainly. But this goes far beyond a simple business exchange. Vaughn and Tony looked forward to seeing each other.
Vaughn and his mother haul bikes to and from Giba. Tony just so happened to be in need of one and asked the mother and son duo to watch for an affordable one.
Little did this gas station attendant know he’d come across a boy with a heart so big, he’d use his vacation money to help his new friend instead.
“Above all things I regard kindness of heart,” Fish said. “And over the years I’ve tried to live like that and teach my child to do the same.”
Her example appears to have paid off, too. Vaughn had been collecting change, saving up so he and his mom could take a holiday.
Instead, he asked if he could use the money to get Tony a bike to ride to work. Fish couldn’t have been more proud of her sweet son.
“Our children make us proud on so many occasions,” Fish shared. “But today my heart and his is so full of the joy at the kind man’s face as he, rather stunned, accepted his gift from this 10-year-old boy.”
“Keep being kind, and generous, with your time and money and remember bringing joy to others can bring just as much joy to yourself,” Fish wrote to her son.
Well done, Vaughn! You are a true example of what Martin Luther King Jr. was speaking about that day. We’re grateful to know your kindness, and we’re certain Tony feels the same!
