Lonely Dog's Desperate Cries Lead Rescuers to Door of Locked Basement After Years of Abuse

Share

There is never an excuse for animal neglect or cruelty. There is always a family, shelter or rescue willing to take in unwanted pets.

Sadly, many animals are still mistreated by their owners. They are malnourished, abused and all too often unloved and forgotten.

Such was the heartbreaking story of Gracie the bulldog. Left to rot in a basement, the 2-year-old pup needed some serious care and attention after she was discovered.

According to a Facebook post shared by Queen City Bulldog Rescue (QCBR), it is thanks to some good Samaritans that Gracie has been rescued.

The post featured a screenshot from a private Facebook group called Cincinnati Animal Rescue. Warning: Gracie’s story might just break your heart.

“Urgent help for a neglected dog,” the post begins. “I just saw one of the saddest things I’ve seen in a long time. This poor girl has been living in utter filth in the basement of an abandoned house near us for weeks, with no access to outdoors.”

The story goes on to share about the filthy basement the bulldog was living in. “Her feet are caked in feces, and her voice is hoarse from barking,” the writer explains.

The owner of the pup had allegedly been using her for breeding, probably trying to turn a profit. The Dodo reported that Gracie could no longer get pregnant, so the owner agreed to let her go for $200.

“She is absolutely desperate for attention and food,” the good Samaritan says, adding that the owner was dumping dog food in the basement to feed Gracie. “But she is so sweet.”

Bulldogs often get a bad rap. But video footage doesn’t lie and a clip of Gracie outside in the fresh air shows just how sweet she truly is.

“She craved human touch!” founder of QCBR, Chelsea Muenzer, told The Dodo. “The moment we came in contact with her she immediately trusted us and I swear knew she was safe.”

“I’m thinking family dog,” someone says in a video posted by the rescue. Family dog is right! The Dodo reported that Gracie has been placed with a foster family and couldn’t be happier. So happy, in fact, she may never leave.

“She is living the cozy life right now,” Muenzer told The Dodo. “She’s a newfound fan of cozy blankets, walks in the sunshine, playing with human kiddos, bubble baths and cookies.”

Gracie is just one of many neglected pets who need a good and loving home. Her personality shines through, which just goes to show you can’t always judge a dog by its breed.
