Man Plunges into Icy Creek To Save Stranger's Dog Trapped in Freezing Water
We’ve heard it a thousand times — dogs are a man’s best friend. However, it would appear, man can be a dog’s best friend, too.
One man from New York will be the first to tell you he’s an animal lover. Don Chatten lives with two dogs and his daughter’s pet pig.
“I don’t want to see any dog get hurt,” Chatten told WIVB. This, it seems, is the mantra this amazing man lives by.
Chatten’s dogs are sharp, too. While the trio was out facing some icy cold weather at Ellicott Island Bark Park, they happened upon a man looking for something.
“I was just getting ready to leave with my two dogs and a gentleman came up to me and asked me if I’d seen a little black dog,” Chatten told Sweet Buffalo.
Chatten hadn’t, but not long after the encounter his dog Milo alerted his master to something in the water.
“He stopped and looked down at the water,” Chatten told WIVB.
“I starting pulling him to go and get in the car, and they both stopped and looked again, and then I heard a faint whimper.”
That whimper was coming from a black dog. With the dog’s owner too far to reach, Chatten knew it was up to him to be the hero the little dog needed that day.
The brave man had to break the ice on top of the water just to get the poor pup out. Chatten then waded back to shore, returning the dog, Jackson, to his owner.
Samantha Kelly, a bystander and fellow dog owner, caught everything on camera.
“Thank God for this man,” Kelly wrote on the Friends of Ellicott Island Bark Park Facebook page. She noted that Chatten “was soaked head to toe.”
Jackson’s owner reportedly took his dog to the vet following the rescue. The dog remained overnight after being treated for hypothermia.
It would appear Jackson and his owner have made newfound and possibly even lifelong friends in Chatten and his own pups. The grateful man hopes to reconnect with Chatten very soon.
“I’ll do it again if it was tomorrow,” Chatten told WIVB. “I’m just glad that I could help.”
This dog lover is a true hero. We’re so grateful everyone is okay and that Chatten just so happened to be in the right place at the right time.
