Share

Every parent wants to protect their children. But you never expect the unthinkable to happen within the saftey of your own neighborhood.

On Monday, Aug. 3, a 7-year-old boy from Independence, Missouri, was severely burned after an encounter with another child.

According to the Kansas City Star, Julien Sandlin was playing outside when his young life was changed drastically.

Julien’s mother Ashley told the Star that another child had poured nail polish remover over her son’s head.

It’s a common household item, but one that’s dangerously flammable and should not be within a child’s reach.

Ashley explained, “My son kept saying ‘Stop. What are you doing?’ Julien kept telling him to leave him alone…”

Fox 4 WDAF made it clear that Ashley was not present to witness the ordeal. “I had received a call when I got to court that my son was being rushed to Children’s Mercy Hospital from a child drowning my son in fingernail polish remover and lit him on fire on purpose,” she said.

The other child reportedly lit a candle and set the 7-year-old on fire. “The burns were so bad that they had to go in immediately and do surgery that they had to scrape his face and all of his skin,” Ashley explained.

A neighbor apparently rushed to Julien’s rescue with a wet towel. Rescuers then rushed him to the hospital.

Not only does this horrific event seem far from accidental, Ashley also told the Star that the other child’s mother witnessed the entire thing and did nothing to stop it.

Police are investigating the situation. No further information has been released at this time regarding the investigation.

The boy may need skin grafts and his mother has set up a GoFundMe page for her son, asking that willing people donate to his recovery. They have already exceeded their $10,000 goal and are onwards to a $50,000 goal.

The latest update to the page posted on August 12 read, “…we are so [grateful] and so blessed with all the donations… Julien is doing well [and is] talking a lot more.”

Still, Julien’s road to recovery will be long and his mother wrote that her son is doing his best to cope with the trauma of this incident.

“He’s a very loving child, he loves to love more than receive love, that’s for sure,” she told the Star. “…He’s a light when he walks in the door.”

Our hearts and prayers are with this mother, the sweet boy and their family. It’s a horrible thing that happened, but thankfully he survived and seems to be doing better each day.
