Musician Weaves Top Worship Songs from Past Decades into Viral 8-Minute A Cappella Showcase

Share

There are some truly talented people out there and the age of social media has allowed many of these people to find a platform for their creativity.

Sites like YouTube and Instagram have given artists, photographers and musicians a voice. A creative outlet. Community. The chance to showcase who they are and what they do.

One trend that’s grown increasingly popular for many music artists in particular is a cappella —  timeless art but one that’s earned more attention with films like “Pitch Perfect” placing it center-stage.

With the amazing technology we have today, singers have the ability to create some awesome, quality music videos with only their own voice, as long as they have the right tools at their fingertips.

YouTuber David Wesley certainly knows his way around a camera — and a microphone. The Christian music artist has nearly 80,000 subscribers to his channel to date.

“I’m just a guy making music in my basement in my spare time,” Wesley tells Liftable, a section of The Western Journal. “I started recording videos because my parents like to watch. I make them for God and to stretch/grow in my craft.”

One of Wesley’s most recent videos — “Evolution of Worship Music (560-2017 A.D.) – A Cappella Medley” — has gone viral, with almost 650K views in under two weeks.

“I was inspired by Pentatonix’s Evolution of Music, and a satire music skit by Tim Hawkins (I believe) that went through some 80’s and 90’s stuff at least,” Wesley shares.

Do you like a cappella music?

In the video’s caption, Wesley describes his “Evolution of Worship Music” as an “A cappella medley filled with almost 1500 years of Christian music crammed into 7.5 minutes. Better strap yourselves in and enjoy the ride!”

And, oh boy, did we ever enjoy the ride! From “Amazing Grace” to “Shout to the Lord,” it’s almost impossible not to close your eyes and sing along.

Wesley calls himself “a song for a season kind of guy” but tells Liftable that “In Christ Alone” has always been one on his mind.

“This video was a lot of fun to make,” Wesley said at the end of his video. “It was a lot of work and it took a long time.”

Wesley also did a follow-up to his “Evolution of Worship Music” — a nearly hour-long stream in which he discusses his thoughts on the video and shares some behind-the-scenes tidbits on how the finished product came to be.

In the end, this talented man remains humble and explains that it’s not about fame for him.

“The fact that more people are listening in now is just a bonus,” Wesley shares with Liftable. “I have the privilege of leading strangers around the world before the throne of God, and I love to hear stories of how God is using my offering to minister to His people.” Amen to that!
