Paraglider Miraculously Survives 150-Foot Fall, Proposes to Trauma Nurse Who Helped Save His Life
Damien LeRoy is 37 years old, an adventurer and a GoPro enthusiast. His life has been nothing short of exciting so far, and his story gives the phrase “I fell for you” a whole new meaning.
In 2016, LeRoy was paragliding in Florida when his paragliding apparatus failed, causing him to hurtle 150 feet to the ground below. LeRoy broke his back, femur, sternum, pelvis and several ribs in the fall.
Inside Edition reports that his GoPro was filming at the time of the accident and caught the terrifying moment that caused LeRoy to fall.
While the situation may have seemed grim, a series of events would soon be set into motion that would change LeRoy’s life forever — and all for the better.
LeRoy was quickly rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach, where he was treated by a trauma team. On that team was Alexandria Hoover, who captured LeRoy’s eye and his heart.
“I just saw her eyes right away and I was like, man,” LeRoy told Inside Edition. “She was just the sweetest person and she cared so much.”
Hoover also remembers this moment. “He looked up at me and he laughed a little and asked me if I had a boyfriend,” she said. At the time she did, but things would soon change.
A year later Hoover and her boyfriend broke up, and she began dating LeRoy.
The two quickly fell for each other and went on many adventures together traveling, seeing the world and experiencing life. Their social media accounts are filled with posts showing them delighting in one another. It was evident that the two young adventurers were meant to be.
On May 28, 2019, LeRoy decided to surprise Hoover and pop the question where they first met — at the hospital. LeRoy chronicled the whole plan with a GoPro video, in which he shared the plan.
“She was complaining about going into work and she said she doesn’t need to come into work,” he said.
While Hoover didn’t realize it, her coworkers and family were in on the plan and had called her in at the request of her soon-to-be fiancé.
In the touching video, Hoover can be seen surrounded by coworkers as she walked into a room where LeRoy was waiting under the covers of a hospital bed.
She seems confused and then shocked as LeRoy pulls back the sheet and stands up, revealing his formal shirt, bowtie and slacks.
“A hundred things ran through my my mind!” Hoover told Inside Edition. She wondered why LeRoy was in the bed, and then her thoughts moved to “why a bowtie?”
As Hoover covered her mouth in shock, LeRoy got down on one knee and asked “Will you marry me?”
“I was given a second chance at life and for sure I was put there for some reason,” LeRoy told Inside Edition. “Now I know and now we get to share the rest of our lives together.”
While Hoover initially seemed shocked, her response quickly became emotional and ecstatic. In an excited Facebook post, the 29-year-old shared “I GET TO MARRY MY BEST FRIEND!… My George of the Jungle, my adventure partner, my sweet guy.”
“She’s a very special woman,” LeRoy said in his video.
They say that truth is sometimes stranger than fiction, but it’s often just as sweet.
