Litter of Seven Puppies Found on Uninhabited Island, Just Like 'Gilligan's Island'

Share

It was a Sunday night. Two residents of northern Manitoba, Canada, were fishing at a lake when they heard a distant chorus of canines.

Wolves, they guessed. Must be wolves yapping.

They thought little of it, and couldn’t see anything distinctive, so they turned in for the evening.

The next morning, the yapping continued. Surprised and curious, the fishers took a boat out on the water to see where the howling was coming from.

Not wolves, after all. Puppies. Labrador retriever mix puppies, stranded on a small island on the lake.

The next couple days were spent boating out to the island, checking on the pups and making sure they were safe. No one knows how long they were out there, but they weren’t very old and they were skinny.

It took people several days to earn the puppies’ trust, but before long the seven little puppies learned that people in a boat meant food, and they soon warmed up to their rescuers.

Of course, with seven puppies found on an island, the names had to be Gilligan’s-Island-themed. There’s Skipper, Ginger, the Professor, Gilligan, Mary Ann and the Howells.

On August 1, the puppies were removed from the island and taken to a nearby foster home, where they will stay until they’re old enough to be adopted.

Most of them are doing very well and have completely accepted their human helpers; some of the shy ones are slowly coming around, but it will take time and positive interaction with humans to really help them relax into being family pets.

According to the Edmonton Journal, Debra Vandekerkhove, who works with a local rescue, assured people that “they’ll adjust really well, and they’ll come around.” They’re still young, and their story can be rewritten.

Rescue footage shows the pups rolling around, enjoying food and playing with toys and being happy, like all puppies should be. You’d never know they’d been stranded on an island.

Vandekerkhove also said they’d be up for adoption in a week or two. So if you’re in the area and want a fluffy black retriever-mix pup, you know what to do!
