Little Caesars made a March Madness promise and now everyone gets free pizza

Share

Hey, America, you just won a free pizza, and it’s all thanks to the Little Caesars pizza chain and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County.

Just prior to the start of the tournament, Little Caesars announced a promo promising free pizza if a No. 16 seed beat a No. 1 seed.

“If any #16-seeded team beats a #1-seeded team in a crazy, unexpected victory in the games played on Thursday, March 15 or Friday, March 16 of the 2018 men’s college basketball tournament, Little Caesars will give away one free HOT-N-READY® Lunch Combo to every family that comes into a participating store between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (local time) on April 2, 2018 and mentions this offer at the check-out counter in accordance with the offer terms and conditions referenced below,” the promo read.

“If a crazy thing happens and there’s an upset, it’ll be a big score for pizza lovers,” said Ed Gleich, senior vice president of global marketing at the pizza chain.

Well, guess what? A crazy thing did indeed happen, as No. 16 UMBC knocked off No. 1 Virginia on Friday night.

And Little Caesars is holding up its end of the bargain.

On Monday, April 2, anyone interested can get a free lunch combo, which consists of a personal-sized pizza with four slices and a 20-ounce drink. Keep in mind, it’s one box per family, not one for everyone in the family.

The time frame is strict, so make sure you get there between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on April 2 to get your free pizza.

And the day of the promotion just happens to be the same day as the NCAA men’s basketball national championship game.

Though this may turn out to be a great promotion for Little Caesars, it’s far from a guarantee, as similar promos by other companies have not always ended well.

Will you be taking advantage of the Little Caesars deal?

Most notably, McDonald’s had a giveaway promotion tied to the 1984 Olympics where every time an American athlete won a medal, fans with the right scratch-off card won free food.

Well, that year, the Soviet Union and many Eastern Bloc nations were disqualified from competing, so the U.S. won 174 medals, nearly twice as many as it took home in 1976. That’s a lot of Big Macs.

Moreover, in 2007, Jordan’s Furniture in Massachusetts had a promotion where they would give customers their money back on all qualifying furniture bought between between March 16 and April 7 if the Red Sox won the World Series.

The Red Sox ended up sweeping the Colorado Rockies to win their second championship in four years, which meant Jordan’s had to cut a lot of rebate checks.

The next year, Jordan’s ran another promotion, but this time they had a caveat — the Red Sox had to sweep their opponents in the World Series. The Sox lost in the ALCS that year to the Tampa Bay Rays.
