Mexico hit with man-made earthquake after epic World Cup goal

Share

When Mexico’s Hirving “Chucky” Lozano scored in the first half against defending World Cup champion Germany, it was earth shaking.

Literally, the earth shook.

Lozano’s goal, which put Mexico up 1-0, triggered a small earthquake in Mexico City.

“The #sismo detected in Mexico City originated artificially. Possibly by massive jumps during the goal of the selection of #México in the World Cup. At least two sensors inside the city detected it at 11:32,” stated SIMMSA in a tweet, which is part of the Institute of Geological and Atmospheric Research.

“During the match the Mexican team managed to get an entry at minute 35:07, it is the moment in which our monitoring systems detected a seismic movement with an acceleration of 37 m / s2 on at least two sensors inside Mexico City, produced most likely in the celebration of it in a massive way,” stated SIMMSA.

Specifically, the earthquake was registered at Venustiano Carranza and Coyoacan in Mexico City, said SIMMSA. These are locations of public squares where thousands of people gathered to watch the match.

One of those squares where the seismic activity was detected was Zocalo.

Mexico held on to win 1-0, recording a huge upset over the defending champions, who are also the favorites this year.

“To start off on the right foot against the best team in the world, it’s a huge result and great work from the team,” Lozano said, according to CBS Sports.

It was Germany’s first opening match loss in World Cup competition since 1982. And it was Mexico’s first win over Germany in international competition since 1985, reports the BBC.

Mexico and Germany play in Group F, along with Sweden and South Korea. Each team plays one another once, with the top two teams advancing. Sweden already beat South Korea.
