Mother's Brutally Honest Reason Daughter Was Late for School is Everything

During an especially stressed-out week of adulting, have you ever stopped and really considered the average super-sized crayon box? Crayola indicates that its largest offering including 120 different hues — and that’s not even counting the specialty colors.

That’s a mind-numbing amount of variation on the basic primary tones of red, blue, and yellow.

Yet it’s got nothing on the astonishing assortment of excuses that have been created to cover a kid being late to class.

Back in the 1800s, things were relatively straightforward. History.com notes that pupils often skipped school for lengthy intervals to tend crops, help with chores, or nurse an ailing family member.

As a teacher, it’s pretty tough to argue when little Tommy explains that he missed all his math lessons because the milking cow had pneumonia. In those comparatively early years, arithmetic could hardly take precedence over agricultural necessity.

But flash forward to the 21st century, and things are quite a bit more complex. Maybe that’s why the sheer, simple honesty of a hysterical photographic post has become so popular on Reddit recently.

It definitely stands out amidst the standard sea of explanations. After all, when you think about the typical school excuse today, what comes to mind?

Our technology is more advanced than ever. Meanwhile, kids themselves are becoming increasingly precocious — so it can be tough to compose a note that adequately covers all the bases.

An experimental Google search comes up with some pretty stellar examples, though.  “My two-year-old daughter hid her shoes,” one harried mother explained. “All of them,” she added, “in the couch.”

Another young daughter had a fun time recounting this breathless run-on of a story:  “Mom locked us out of the house but left the keys in the car with it running to heat up, but the car was locked and she had to call my dad who is a cop who had to respond in the police car with another officer and by the time dad got to our house, the car had run out of gas so dad had to bring me to school.” The youngster added how “cool” it was to be dropped off by a patrol vehicle.

But the Reddit mother who’s become a social media sensation dispensed with all that detail. Her heroically no-frills, handwritten entry on the tardy slip boiled everything down to two refreshingly candid words: “bad parenting.”

A little too uncomfortably on-the-nose? Maybe, maybe not.

Because on the plus side, it’s a good bet that Mom’s daughter Sophie will learn a lot about the merits of forthright sincerity.

And amused Redditors everywhere absolutely agree that this particular parent earns major extra credit points for telling it like it is.
