NCAA Football Star Suffers 'Strange Injury' Climbing into Bed, College Career Possibly Over

Share

We’ve heard about athletes getting hurt from such seemingly routine activities as sneezing or even from falling asleep in a tanning bed, and it appears we can add another entry to the list of weirdest athlete injuries.

Utah Utes running back Zack Moss’ knee injury came as the result of a pre-existing condition that was  aggravated when he was climbing into bed.

The injury is to Moss’ meniscus and it kept him out of the Utes’ 32-25 victory over Oregon on Saturday.

But no one, including his coach, knows quite when the injury happened.

“It could have been a week ago, a month ago, a year ago,” Kyle Whittingham said. “There’s just no way to tell.”

Whittingham added that Moss’ knee “locked up on him” when climbing into bed. Previous reports had indicated that Moss suffered the injury during practice last Wednesday.

Should Moss return to action for Utah if his injury doesn't require surgery?

Moss is seeking a second opinion regarding possible surgery which could spell the end of the junior’s college career.

The injury, itself, isn’t career-ending but the Utes have just two more regular season games remaining before the Pac-12 Championship and a bowl game.

With Moss likely entering the upcoming NFL draft, it doesn’t make much sense for him to rush back after surgery and risk re-injuring himself ahead of turning pro.

Moss seemed to acknowledge the injury on a Twitter post from Thursday.

Before the injury, Moss was on pace to not only break the Utes’ single-season rushing record, but also become the Utes’ all-time leading rusher.

His replacement, Armand Shyne, lived up to his surname in Moss’ absence by rushing for 174 yards, which was eight more yards than he had in his previous nine games combined.

Utah finishes its conference schedule next week at Colorado before concluding its regular season with a home game against BYU.

The Utes currently lead the South Division of the Pac-12 Conference but aren’t guaranteed to win the division even with a win next week. Both Arizona and Arizona state have one fewer conference win but both teams have also played one fewer conference game. Arizona State would win a tiebreaker against Utah thanks to the Sun Devils’ Nov. 3 win against Utah.

With seven wins so far this season, Utah is guaranteed a bowl game for the fifth year in a row. If the Utes win the rest of their games, including a bowl game and a potential Pac-12 title game, they would finish with 11 wins.

That would be the third most wins in program history, which dates back to 1905.
