NFL star taken into custody after latest arrest

Share

Free agent linebacker Aldon Smith was reportedly arrested Friday night in San Francisco for violating a condition of his bail.

Smith was taken into custody at 5:00 p.m. on Friday and booked into the San Francisco County Jail, TMZ reported.

His bond was set at $500,000.

The former NFL star’s latest round of legal issues stems from an alleged domestic violence incident that occurred on March 3. On March 12, San Francisco Superior Court Judge Ross Moody issued a restraining order that prohibited Smith from making contact with his alleged victim.

But late last month, authorities said, he violated that restraining order.

Smith appeared in court Thursday and was arraigned for ignoring the order. During the court appearance, Moody ordered Smith to wear an ankle monitor that detects alcohol consumption through sweat.

“The Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitor, or SCRAM, is a transdermal alcohol testing system — it automatically samples sweat at random intervals for traces of alcohol released through the skin and transmits the results to a monitoring service. The device can also provide location monitoring,” the San Jose Mercury News reported Friday.

The judge also warned Smith to refrain from contacting the woman in the domestic violence case and to stay away from the residence where the alleged incident occurred.

But Smith “allegedly violated a condition of his electronic monitoring,” leading to his latest arrest, according to TMZ, who cited officials at the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.

Smith’s fiancée, Shawna McKnight, said in a statement that the couple is no longer together.

“Unfortunately through these circumstances Aldon and I are no longer together,” she said. “Although it’s with a heavy heart I truly wish him the best and pray he gets the help he needs. I will always have love for him but at this point I’m simply the victim in this ongoing case.”

Do you think Smith will ever play in the NFL again?

Smith, 28, was taken by the San Francisco 49ers with the seventh pick in the 2011 NFL draft.

Smith had 14 sacks in his rookie season, and the next year, he racked up 19.5 sacks, earning him a First-Team All-Pro selection. He followed that up with 8.5 sacks in 11 games in 2013.

But then, legal problems started piling up for the linebacker. In August 2015, he was arrested for DUI and hit-and-run charges. That was his second DUI-related arrest since 2012, and this time, the 49ers released him.

Smith signed with the Oakland Raiders in September 2015 and played in seven games, but was soon suspended by the league for his hit-and-run arrest. He has not played a down of professional football since then.

In September 2017, Smith pleaded no contest to the hit-and-run arrest.

Smith has pleaded not guilty to the domestic violence charges he is currently facing. He is due back in court April 11.
