Ocasio-Cortez Embarrasses Herself, Doesn't Know the Basics of Congress and the Presidency

Share

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s membership in the Democratic Socialists of America should be all the proof needed to call her politically ignorant. If it wasn’t, maybe her gaffe on Monday will convince you she belongs nowhere near a government office.

During a speech, the young socialist pictured herself getting “inaugurated,” not sworn in like members of Congress. She also said that once “inaugurated,” she would begin “signing” bills on health care and other issues.

Members of Congress in the House and Senate vote to approve (or oppose) bills. Signing bills into law is typically the realm of the president of the United States. Most Americans know that. Ocasio-Cortez apparently does not.

It may be tough to imagine a rational adult who is willing to cast a vote for her, but enough of them exist to give her a real shot at shaping the laws of our country.

Although she argues for the worst political system to ever exist, this surprisingly isn’t enough for voters to avoid her like the plague.

In fact, they react in the opposite way. Democrats in her New York City district liked her ideas so much that they chose her over 10-term Rep. Joe Crowley in the June primary.

This has thrown the socialist candidate into the national spotlight, galvanizing her followers. Political media has been less than friendly, and to date the candidate has not accepted offers to debate from a number of prominent conservative voices.

Are these gaffes a sign of basic ignorance about American government?

Perhaps it’s because Ocasio-Cortez is no stranger to missteps like the ones in her speech, but they go largely unreported and unnoticed by her supporters.

She once claimed unemployment numbers were skewed because of the vast number of people working two jobs. A fact check quickly proved that wrong, with the incident highlighting her ignorance of economics.

Ocasio-Cortez also believes a conspiracy theory about detainee quotas for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Even the liberal-leaning PolitiFact ruled that one wrong.

The fact that Ocasio-Cortez is a leading candidate for political office has many questioning the sanity of the Democratic Party as a whole.

And with her understanding of government behind even modern social studies standards, it leaves some wondering how she even graduated school in the first place.

Ocasio-Cortez must have missed a few episodes of Schoolhouse Rock.

It’s interesting to note than an anthropomorphic piece of paper knows more about the branches of government than the DSA’s finest, even though he’s “just a bill.”
