Ocasio-Cortez Makes Unbelievable Gaffe With Sanders, Seemingly Forgets What Words Mean

Share

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is on a roll.

The “democratic socialist” — which is another term for, well, socialist — may have gained national attention by winning a congressional primary in New York City that gives her a chance to go to Washington, but she’s rapidly tripping over herself by acting shockingly clueless about almost everything.

In her latest gaffe, the young, far-left candidate appeared with fellow socialist Bernie Sanders, and then made a mistake that’s hard to explain by anything other than rank ignorance.

“Hello, everybody,” Ocasio-Cortez stated on a video that appeared on Sanders’ verified Twitter page. “I’m so excited to be hopping on here, on Senator Sanders’ account, and we’re here in Kansas City to rally for Brent Welder.”

Welder is a Democrat who is running for the party’s nomination in Kansas to challenge a strong conservative opponent, incumbent Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder. Despite campaigning for a Democrat, Ocasio-Cortez became confused and declared that she wanted to make the district er, Republican.

“We’re going to flip this seat red in November!” she insisted in the video.

Ocasio-Cortez might not have realized what she was saying, but someone at the Sanders Twitter operation eventually did and deleted the post some time Saturday. By then, though, it had been noticed by The Kansas City Star, Fox NewsThe Daily Wire and countless other outlets.

It had also been picked up by internet users who thought it was too funny to be allowed to disappear:

Do you think Ocasio-Cortez is qualified to serve in Congress?

Here’s the problem: Flipping the seat “red” would mean voting for the GOP. Even high school students who have a basic grasp of U.S. politics know that in current parlance, on election nights, so-called “red states” are Republican while “blue states” are Democrat.

In other words, Ocasio-Cortez either has a lower understanding of politics than most teenagers or doesn’t know the difference between red and blue. Considering that she has a college degree in international relations and wants to serve in the U.S. Congress, this isn’t reassuring.

Of course, it’s possible that it was a Freudian slip: Maybe she meant “red” as in communist.

As The Daily Wire astutely pointed out, it isn’t the first time that Ocasio-Cortez has demonstrated a shockingly shallow depth of knowledge on important issues.

“She made a series of embarrassing statements over the last couple of weeks, including calling Israel the occupiers of Palestine and admitting she did not know what she was talking about,” that outlet summarized.

Over the weekend, we also reported that she seemed to have no idea what role Immigration and Customs Enforcement plays in national law enforcement, yet continues to call for it to be completely disbanded.

Her continued gaffes may be cringe-worthy, but perhaps a lack of knowledge shouldn’t be so surprising. After all, this is a candidate who wants everything to be free, yet has no idea how to pay for it.

Government-guaranteed jobs for every person, lax border security, mass immigration, free college for everyone, and socialist-style health care are all positions that she has publicly taken. There are Democrats and then there are far-left socialists; Ocasio-Cortez is clearly the latter.

While her failure to grasp even basic ideas — like what “red states” are or why socialism fails — is eye-opening, the fact that New York Democrat voters chose her in the primary is even more appalling.

That should say a lot about how far the left has moved away from reality, and it doesn’t bode well for the Democrat party or the future of politics.
