Officers Line Street To Pay Respects for Fallen Officer in Stunning Video

Share

Police cars, officers, and community members lined the street in honor of a Massachusetts police officer who fell in the line of duty.

“Never, never, has anything like this been assembled,” an officer marveled in a video, looking out over the line of people on the route to the cemetery.

The line of people and cars seemed to go on forever with the police officers, “all saluting, all with their partners with them.” The K9 partners obediently sat by their handler’s side in honor of K9 officer Sean Gannon.

It is clear that the community lost a great policeman. “We give him back to you without a murmur, but our hearts are wrung with sorrow,” Rev. Paul Caron said during the funeral.

The 32-year-old and K9 Nero had a warrant for the arrest of Thomas Latanowich, who had been on their radar for a little over a year but had recently broken probation.

Gannon, Nero and the other officers searched the house where Latanowich was hiding, but couldn’t find him anywhere. The only place left to look was the attic.

As per police tactics, Nero was sent in first because he can smell or hear a suspect before a human, crawl through small spaces, and can quickly conquer a suspect without a weapon.

Gunshots rang out and Nero was shot in the face before Gannon entered the attic behind him and took a bullet in the head.

When the other officers got to him, it was too late. They found Nero, still breathing, but Gannon was dead.

Nero, Gannon’s K9 partner has since been released from the hospital after he was injured in the shooting.

“At the end of one of the most emotional and saddest days, and six-day period in American and Yarmouth Police Department history, our beloved 4-legged partner K9 Nero was released from his hospital and was taken home … in his fallen partner Sergeant Sean M. Gannon’s cruiser,” Yarmouth police said.

The dog will stay with another officer until he is fully healed then he will be returned to the Gannon family. “Rest in Peace Sean, your beloved K9 Nero is home.”

Gannon leaves behind his wife, parents, a brother and a sister. He and his wife, Dara, were planning on starting a family after their most recent vacation to Hawaii.

Rest in peace Officer Sean Gannon. Our thoughts are with his family, his dog, and the Yarmouth community during this difficult time.
