Rachael Ray Crew Member Cuts Hair for First Time in 15 Years

Share

Not so long ago, I experienced something of a milestone birthday. I ended up crossing from one decade of life into another, and that made me stop and take stock — primarily of my wardrobe.

See, I discovered that I still had clothes from high school hanging in my closet. Amazingly, they still fit.

However, the style proved less than stunning. I’m sure plenty of men and women have had similar epiphanies, and television personal Rachael Ray has made it her mission to provide them with presentable style.

If you only have passing knowledge of Ray, you may assume that she works solely in the world of cooking. Indeed, that was how she first made a name for herself.

But in 2006, she started a daytime talk show that continues to this day. And one of the things it focuses on is makeovers of both women and men.

For instance, according to the show’s website, she provided a “man-over” for a long-haired mountain man named Ian. With a mane of white hair, a barely trimmed goatee, and a penchant for holey denim and unstructured shirts, Ian never would’ve graced the cover of “GQ.”

“They say change is good, but sometimes it’s just plain old necessary,” Ray intoned at the start of the segment. And by its end, an neatly trimmed Ian looked both presentable and surprisingly handsome.

Of course, it’s one thing to change the style of a complete stranger and something else entirely to remake a person close to you. But the show’s website reported that Ray did just that for her longtime production assistant, Max.

To call Max and Ray close hardly cuts it. The two have worked together so closely and for so long that Ray calls him her “daytime husband.”

However, the 28-year-old man hadn’t cut his hair since the seventh grade. If “homeless chic” was a thing, Max might’ve possessed it.

“I have to pay you back,” Ray exclaimed when she sprung the surprise on him. “You’ve been washing my dishes and taking care of me and cleaning up after me, so we’re going to clean you up a little.”

Stylist Kyan Douglas stepped in to help and found Max remarkably agreeable. “One of the things that he really is troubled with right now is that his hair is thinning on top,” he said.

“And so he keeps noticing in photographs that he has this long hair, but it’s thinning. So that’s really a big motivator for him.”

It proved a worthwhile motivation. When Max stepped out onto the set after his makeover, he had turned from a scruffy dude to a strikingly handsome man.

“Wow, talk about you won’t be single for long!” Ray exclaimed. “You look amazing!”

Max seemed pleased with the change. “Thank you, thank you!” he said. “I think so, too.”
