In George Orwell’s classic book “Animal Farm,” which was really a takedown of Soviet-style communism, he included a compelling phrase that sums up the socialist ideology: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”
Unfortunately, that hypocritical duality is alive and well and on display among a certain segment of the political populace in America today — progressive leftist elitists. These leftists seem to enjoy a “privilege” not extended to conservatives or anyone else who fails to toe the leftist line, according to an Op-Ed published in PJ Media from counter-jihadist author Robert Spencer.
Case in point is John Kerry, a former senator, presidential candidate and secretary of state. Kerry, a made-man among the leftist elite, recently committed a series of acts that placed him directly in violation of a long-standing but rarely, if ever, enforced law: the Logan Act.
We recently covered how, ahead of President Donald Trump’s Tuesday announcement that he was withdrawing the United States from the Obama administration-brokered Iran nuclear deal, Kerry was reported to have been jet-setting all around the globe. He was attempting to drum up support for the flawed agreement he helped bring about by meeting with former counterparts and other high-level foreign dignitaries.
That would place him in direct violation of the Logan Act, which prohibits private American citizens from engaging in unauthorized diplomacy or negotiations with foreign governments. The obvious purpose of such a law is to prevent non-governmental opponents of the current administration from actively working to undermine that administration’s agenda, policies and priorities.
Our readers no doubt recall how the Logan Act was invoked with outraged howls by liberals during the transition period between Trump’s election and inauguration against incoming National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, though he was never actually charged under that statute.
Flynn’s alleged “crime”? He was “outed” by Obama administration holdovers and their liberal media allies for secretly making contact with the Russian ambassador — which would actually be part of his job as a member of the incoming administration — and then allegedly lying about it to FBI agents. That led to his prosecution for lying to federal agents by the Robert Mueller-led special counsel investigation into alleged Russian collusion with the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.
So, if Flynn had supposedly run afoul of the Logan Act and “colluded” with a foreign government to undermine the agenda and policies of the Obama administration that was still in power at the time — and was later prosecuted in relation to that “crime” — why hasn’t there been a similar uproar over Kerry’s more egregious undermining of the current administration’s agenda and policies?
In other words, why hasn’t Kerry been arrested yet and when will he be prosecuted? In Spencer’s view, that will never happen, thanks in part to Kerry being a member in good standing of the progressive left, and thus enjoying “leftist privilege.”
Spencer wrote that the “deep state” agents and bureaucrats who would oversee such an arrest and prosecution would never do. That’s because they agree with what Kerry was attempting to do, namely save a top priority legacy achievement from the prior leftist administration that was at risk of being undone by the current, non-leftist administration.
However, take a moment and fast-forward to the year 2025. Imagine now-former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, or any other top official from the recently departed two-term Trump administration, similarly flying around the globe in a seditious effort to undermine the new leftist Democrat administration’s plans to undo Trump’s achievements.
Do you think the leftists would hesitate for one minute to bring down the full weight of any and every applicable law — including the Logan Act — to ensure such efforts not only failed, but were severely punished and never attempted again?
We all know the answer to that hypothetical question.
But that is because Trump’s team is not composed of privileged, protected leftists. As we have seen time and again in the current day, “The law in the United States is for the little people, and for conservatives,” not those who enjoy “leftist privilege,” Spencer wrote.
No, the law doesn’t always apply to those with “leftist privilege,” such as Kerry or his predecessor, Hillary Clinton, who sent classified information on an unsecured private email server and was never punished.
Nor will the man who epitomizes “leftist privilege,” the overseer of a “scandal-free” but utterly corrupt and lawless administration — Barack Obama — be held accountable for his actions. The same would appear to hold true for his many privileged leftist underlings.
All of that said, things are not always as they appear in the current Age of Trump. As our culture and society undergo a massive change, the “privilege” that leftists have enjoyed and exploited may not protect them as much as they assume in the not-so-distant future. So don’t despair too much at the blatant hypocrisy, as leftists may eventually understand what “equality” and justice truly mean.
