Royalty Visit the White House, But Melania Stole the Show

Share

It wasn’t only a few weeks ago that Washington was abuzz with the chattering class speculating about why first lady Melania Trump was out of public view.

This week, with Melania entertaining Spanish royalty with President Donald Trump in the White House, it was clear she was back in the game for good.

When Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain visited Washington, Melania had her own kind of royal dignity on display.

It’s one of Melania’s highest-visibility appearances since she had kidney surgery, and she appeared to be enjoying it as much as the cameramen enjoyed catching her image.

Of course, there was plenty of business to do.

“President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Their Majesties King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain to the White House on June 19, 2018, culminating in the royal family’s tour across the country to celebrate over 300 years of historic and cultural ties between our two great countries,” the White House said in a statement marking the event.

“The President and the King reaffirmed a 30-year bilateral military alliance and commitment to NATO,” the statement continued. “The leaders also discussed strengthening economic and security ties, balancing transatlantic trade, and diversifying Europe’s sources of energy. The President also expressed support for a strong and united Spain that leads in Europe.”

Do you think Melania outshone Spanish royalty?

According to USA Today, the meeting involved a brief one-on-one chat, followed by a bilateral discussion involving the two leaders and their aides while Melania and Queen Letizia had tea.

“It’s a great honor to have the king and queen of Spain,” Trump said.

“It’s a beautiful country. We were in Spain not so long ago and we love it.”

He added that, “Our relationship has been outstanding over the years … Excellent trade relationship, military relationship. Just about everything you can have. So we love Spain.”

It’s worth noting, as USA Today did, that the queen is “widely admired in Europe for her looks and style, wore a sleeveless sheath dress in coral pink with matching pumps.”

So these were two first ladies with first-class styles.

The newspaper also noted that “the two women share a fondness for towering heels,” a statement which had me searching just how many articles about #MeToo had been published by the official paper of the Days Inn continental breakfast.

Either way, it was yet more proof that Melania Trump is back, and still a tough act to follow. Even if you’re royalty.
