Samaritans Break Open Drainage Pipe to Rescue Terrified Dog Trapped Inside

Share

Our beloved pets can get loose and run away for lots of reasons. It’s especially vital to remember this during summertime, with its many festivals and Fourth of July celebrations.

One of the most common reasons our animal companions bolt? Sudden or scary noises like fireworks, crowd cheering, even loud thunder.

But in reality, lots of things can prompt a pet to take off on the run. A few may simply become bored, while others are egged on by a mischievous squirrel or chipmunk.

According to the American Humane Association and the ASPCA, roughly 10 million dogs and cats are lost or stolen each year in the United States alone.

That means over the course of their lifetime, one in three pets will become separated from their human family for one reason or another.

And sometimes, those separated pets can wind up in pretty dangerous positions. In the video below, for example, two unsuspecting men heard muffled whimpering noises coming from somewhere underground.

The two men were standing over a drainpipe at the time. Naturally, they became concerned about those pitiful whining and crying sounds, so they began digging on the spot.

At first, they cleared away surface leaves, grass, and soil. Then they began scooping out clumps of dense clay further down.

The pathetic cries persisted, even as the surface of the drainpipe became exposed. These two good Samaritans realized they were likely working against the clock, and began physically cutting away the metal pipe itself with jagged shards of brick.

What came into view was an emaciated white dog. This pup had somehow managed to wedge himself into the narrow pipe — then realized he couldn’t escape on his own.

It turned out his rescuers’ quick thinking literally saved his life. The pooch was described as dehydrated, gaunt, extremely hungry, and infested with fleas.

But besides being numb and thoroughly shaken up, the freed canine was otherwise uninjured. It’s not clear exactly who this sweet pup belonged to — but the moral of this story is crystal-clear.

Keep a close and protective eye on your favorite animal companion, any time of year. Smart pet investments include a sturdy leash, a well-fitted collar, an up-to-date ID tag, and an inexpensive microchip for tracking purposes.

Also, work on recall training whenever you have the chance. Our cats and canines can certainly be inquisitive — but in the end, their favorite place to be is right by our side.
