Schumer Once Blamed Trump For Making Up Border Crisis, Now Blames Him For Pic of Dead Migrants

Share

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer used to believe that the border crisis was a fabrication from the Trump administration. Now, he’s blaming the president for the drowning of a migrant man and his daughter in the Rio Grande.

Confused by such a dramatic reversal? So am I.

Just months ago, Schumer berated the president from the Senate floor for using “the backdrop of the Oval Office to manufacture a crisis, stoke fear, and divert attention from the turmoil in his administration.”

So what is the Senate minority leader saying now that disturbing pictures of the drowning have surfaced?

“We’ve got to change our policies,” Schumer said, according to TheBlaze.

“So, president Trump, if you want to know the real reason there’s chaos at the border, look in the mirror.

“Mr. President, you are president of the United States,” Schumer said. “You are head of the executive branch. You control what’s happening at the border. And much of what’s happening at the border, president Trump, stems from the chaos and mismanagement in your administration.”

Schumer places no blame on Congress, of course. No concession that the legislative branch has treated border security as a minor issue.

But the president “manufacture[d] a crisis”?

Is Schumer a hypocrite for changing his tune on the border crisis?

As the article from TheBlaze continues, “the immigration policy origins of the current asylum-driven crisis are similar to the origins of the crisis that the U.S. experienced five years ago during the summer of 2014 during which then-President Obama warned Central American about the danger of making journey to the U.S. in order to claim asylum: ‘Do not send your children to the borders. If they do make it, they’ll get sent back; more importantly, they might not make it.'”

Obama’s quote may be making the rounds this week, as it should be.

Schumer’s comments may not receive the same attention.

“President Trump, I want you to look at this photo,” Schumer said, according to The Hill.

“These are not drug dealers, or vagrants, or criminals. They are people simply fleeing a horrible situation in their home country for a better life,” Schumer said.

But there wasn’t a border crisis before. It was manufactured. Now, it’s very real and must be acted upon with the gravity that it deserves.

The fact is that the current immigration rules we’re playing under were established during the Obama administration. If the Democrats have a problem with them, their quarrel is not with Trump.
