One of the perks of getting older is senior discounts! While there are many discounts made available to those over 55 years old, they are rarely posted publicly.

This means that you either have to ask or already know about the senior discounts different companies offer.

Here are some discounts you may not have known about:

Everyone buys groceries. Why not save a little while you buy those pantry staples? Fred Meyer, Albertson’s, Piggly Wiggly and Hy-Vee all offer discounts depending on the location.

Some of these stores only offer them on a specific day, so next time you stop into your local grocery store just ask the cashier if they offer any kind of senior discount.

Banana Republic offers a 10 percent discount for people over 50 yrs old. Kohl’s gives 15 percent off to those over 60 and each Walgreens location has a “Seniors Day” once a month where they offer 20 percent off to those over 55.

Other stores that offer discounts include Ross, Dress Barn, and Stein Mart. Even Goodwill gives a discount that varies from store to store. Make sure to ask your nearby location how they participate.

Get senior discounts on the go at these fast food restaurants.

Life doesn’t necessarily slow down after retirement. Many fast food restaurants know this and offer discounts to their senior crowd.

McDonald’s gives discounts on coffee and other beverages to customers over the age of 55. Select locations of both Wendy’s and Whataburger give free drinks with a meal.

Burger King also gives a 10 percent discount to people over the age of 60.



Other restaurants also offer senior discounts if you want to spend more time visiting with friends.

Restaurants like Perkins, Fazoli’s, and Sizzlers have exclusive senior menus with lower prices. Ask your waitress to see these special menus after your seated.

Piccadilly Cafeteria and IHOP both offer a 10 percent discount to their senior customers. Again, these discounts can vary from location to location, so ask your waiter after you sit down or call ahead and ask.



Save on your lodging during your travels by staying at a hotel that offers a senior discount.

If you’re planning on booking a trip soon, don’t forget to ask the hotel that you’re staying at if they offer any discounts.

Select locations of well-known names like Marriott, Hampton Inns & Suites, and Wyndham Hotels offer senior discounts. For some, you can take advantage of the discount online, but if you book over the phone, you can also ask the person making your reservation.

Participating locations of Hyatt Hotels offer up to 50 percent off on reservations for two people that are made in advance! That’s definitely a discount worth asking for.



Cruise around the world and save money doing it!

Cruises are an all inclusive way to see different parts of the world. Whether you are going somewhere with lots of sun and sand or somewhere else, know that many cruise lines have special programs and pricing for their senior travelers.

Companies like Carnival Crusies and Royal Carribean participate, but no matter which cruise line you decide to travel with, make sure to check in with your specific company to see what kind of deals you can get.



Don’t let rising movie ticket prices scare you away; ask for a discount!

It seems like movie ticket prices keep going up every year. What used to be a fun, family outing has become a large financial commitment.

Large movie theaters like AMC and Regal Cinemas both offer discounts starting at 30 percent off. With discounts like that, going to the movies doesn’t seem as daunting.



Enjoy the great outdoors for less money!

The National Parks are an often underestimated travel destination. The preserved natural landmarks are definitely worth the trek. They are often a great addition to a summer road trip as well!

With each park having entrance fees to help keep the park running, visiting these beautiful places can really add up.

For nature lovers over 62, two different options are available. The Annual Pass for seniors is only $20, while the lifetime pass is only $80. You can purchase the pass online or from any park. Check out the National Park website for more information.
