She Turns 106 with 103-Yr-Old Sister by Her Side, Reveals Her Secret to a Long Life

Share

In this day and age, it’s quite something to live a long life. With pollution, cancer, and various diseases, we often hear of loved ones passing before they reach retirement age.

It’s a sad thing when we lose friends or family early on. Many children like myself grow up with photos of their grandparents as the only memories of the generations before them.

Which is why it’s refreshing to see a healthy and happy woman make it past her 100th birthday. But what’s perhaps even more refreshing is to watch her reach such a milestone with her 103-year-old sister in tow.

Evangelina Williams did not just turn 100, but recently celebrated her 106th year of life. The icing on the cake is that her younger sister, Amparo Perez, will soon turn 104.

Born and raised in Cuba, the sisters now share a room at a nursing home in the Bronx, happy to be roommates just like they were during childhood. And what’s to thank for their long lives together?

According to Williams, her age can be attributed to abstaining from smoking and holding a “love for music” of the Julio Iglesias variety. I’d say that’s a pretty good combo.

The 106-year-old made a living making “fine” dresses, but sewing is out of the question now that she suffers from arthritis and dementia.

Still, I’m betting she can’t complain too much, seeing as how she’s still kicking it with no sign of quitting any time soon.

Both sisters use wheelchairs, but this didn’t stop them from partying in style. Big smiles, colorful balloons, and upbeat music accompanied the festivities, and Williams even sported a fun pair of purple sunglasses and a shiny (and fluffy) princess tiara.

Though the celebration didn’t include grandkids as Williams never had children, plenty of other residents and nursing home staff joined in the celebration. The traditional “Happy Birthday” song was sung and trick candles were placed on the cake.

When Williams went to blow them out, only to find them light again, everyone laughed, adding to the fun. What a wonderful way to celebrate a long life of sisterhood.

Williams and her sister’s positive attitudes despite their health issues serve as a great reminder that age is just a number.

And, sometimes, all you need are a few trick candles and one lifelong companion to make every year the best one of your life.
