It’s certainly no secret that rap mogul Jay Z and his songstress wife Beyoncé are close friends and strong supporters of President Obama. During Obama’s 2012 run for a second term, the super-celebrity power couple set up a flashy fundraiser that reportedly brought in many millions of dollars for the president’s reelection campaign.
Now The Daily Mail reports that Jay Z and Beyoncé personally sent big money to defense funds in Baltimore and Ferguson to help bail out of jail protesters arrested in those two cities, according to an activist and author close to the couple. Dream hampton, who worked with Jay Z on his autobiography, Decoded, some five years ago (and spells her name in all lowercase), let the cash cat out of the bag in a series of tweets that were deleted not long after being posted — apparently because she was scolded for disclosing the information.
The website of hip-hop magazine Complex captured images of hampton’s Twitter messages (seen below) before they abruptly disappeared. Making no attempt to conceal its decidedly one-sided take on the protests in racially troubled hot spots, the Complex author wrote:

Speaking on the current difficulties surrounding protests, hampton pointed to one of the most damaging wars being waged against black resistance — a financial stronghold. “Protest is literally punished with tariffs,” hampton tweeted.
Before her tweets were deleted, hampton also disclosed that Jay Z and Beyoncé quietly donated not just to defense funds for protesters, but also to the so-called Black Lives Matter movement. An article on Yahoo! News reveals:
…Jay Z and his pop superstar wife Beyonce wrote a ‘huge check’ to support the burgeoning ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement aimed at improving police treatment of African Americans.

The Yahoo! article also notes that, during a concert over the weekend in New York, Jay Z “paid homage to [Michael] Brown and [Freddie] Gray.”
