Ben Carson stated on “Meet the Press” Sunday morning that he would not “advocate” for a Muslim to become President of the United States. He went on to say that a president’s faith should matter if their faith is “inconsistent with the values and principles of America.”
White House press secretary, Josh Earnest, harshly criticized Dr. Carson’s statements, saying, “The views articulated by Dr. Carson are entirely inconsistent with the Constitution that does actually guarantee the freedom of religion in this country.” He went on: “So ultimately there will be consequences. Certainly, those views will be taken into account by voters, both in the primary and in the general election.”
An advisor of Ben Carson said on Monday that Carson would not apologize for his words.

Earnest also said that Donald Trump’s failure to correct a town hall attendee’s charge that Barack Obama was a secret Muslim was part of a bigger problem within the Republican Party.
Trump said that he didn’t feel an obligation to correct the man.
Trump added on a Sunday talk show: “I don’t talk about people’s faith. Now, in all fairness, he said he was a Christian, and he said he is a Christian.” He added: “He attended the church of Reverend Wright. And so, you know, I’m willing to take him at his word for that. I have no problem with that.”

Josh Earnest stated: “We have seen, not just a tendency, but a willingness on the part of some successful Republican politicians, let’s face it, Dr. Carson in many of the polls ranks second or third, in elevating his status in the Republican party, and we’ve seen the willingness on the part of many of these candidates to countenance offensive views all in the pursuit of political support.”
