These Are Rev. Michael Curry's Most Inspiring Quotes from the Royal Wedding

Share

Meghan Markle is now officially Duchess of Sussex after an awe-inspiring ceremony that was full of nods to tradition as well as departures.

The setting was typical: St. George’s chapel is a regal and time-honored location for a royal wedding.

Even though Meghan was walked down the aisle by Prince Charles, she was not given away by anyone. She was her own woman, and she owned it.

She left out the “obey” part of her vows, following in Princess Diana’s footsteps. But she did vow to her groom that she would “love him, comfort him, honor and protect him.”

Rev. Michael Curry gave the royal wedding address. His rousing speech made an impact on both local and virtual attendees, filling the chapel with the importance of love.

Curry is the first African-American to become head of the Episcopal church, and he hails from Chicago. Prince Harry appeared to mouth “wow” after Curry’s message, and plenty of viewers shared the sentiment.

“There is power in love,” Curry said. “Don’t underestimate it. Don’t even over-sentimentalize it. There is power, power in love.”

“There’s a certain sense, in which when you are loved and you know it … it actually feels right.”

“And the love that brings two people together is the same love that can bind them together whether on mountaintops of happiness and through valleys of hardship.”

“There’s power in love to lift up and liberate when nothing else will,” said Curry. “There’s power in love to show us the way to live.”

“Dr. King was right. ‘We must discover the power of love, the redemptive power of love.’ And when we discover that, we will be able to make of this old world a new world. Love is the only way.”

Hopefully the couple will be able to remember these words of wisdom as they begin their new lives together.
